Why Did Some Mini's Have The Heater Blower In The Engine Compartment And What Do I Need To Move It?

My '67 MKII had the heater blower in the engine compartment. This is a problem for 2 reasons, it is ugly and in the way, and the case is shattered and unusable.

From the pictures I've searched, the heater box looks identical to other mini's of the era except it doesn't have the internal motor.

So what do I need to mount the motor inside the heater box? Or do I need to source a different motor and some type of mounting plate?

Does anyone have a pic of how the motor is mounted inside the box?

Thanks,

Mike

Nope. All were in the cabin.

or to put it another way. UK build Minis all had cabin mounted heaters if they had one fitted.

Fresh air heater with external blower was a factory option 59-63 (according to Somerford)

ThunderBay isn’t in the U.K. though so it may be an export model, where they may have been used more.

Nope. UK built Minis up to the late 1960's supplied to cold export markets had an updated heater unit and had the early style snail motor on the inner wing.

This image, not my car but found on another thread on this forum is presumably how mine was originally: https://imgur.com/uTbakAb

Nope you’re wrong.

From ‘59 - ‘63 you could have a a heater system with a large blower over then clutch and cable controlled flap and duct mounted to the front panel with a much larger heater box mounted under the parcel shelf.

There was nothing particularly special about the parts, I think they were mostly standard Smiths pieces with a few Mini specific brackets. They keep you lovely and warm due to the size of the matrix so I suspect the latter Mini of the OP has had one added at some point to make the winters more manageable.

While it is possible the owner replaced the entire heating system for a earlier version, I think, because I am in Canada, a cold climate, that this car got it from the factory for export as others have suggested. Either that or it was a dealer installed option.

I am also not sure where my car was made.  I have heard of Mini's being manufactured in Canada although I am not sure of that or what years that may have happened.

The heater blower motor/housing looks the same as an early Sprite/Midget so it would be worth having a look for one of those on e-bay, it might even share it with the A30/A35.

If I recall, the set up with the blower motor in the engine bay was an option (might be standard in some markets ?). It was a more powerful blower and I think the heater core was also bigger than the all in cabin types. They were described as an Extra Powerful Heater Unit. Many of the Works cars were fitted with this set up.

I don't want to beat a dead horse on whether this heater was original in my car but his page:

https://www.somerfor...r-units-1959-69

shows the heater I have, "metal body heater (uses external fan)" as being optional in Saloons from 63-68 and it shows the external fan directly below it.

A30/35's is a "snail-shaped" unit mounted in the engine bay and blows through a heater box into the car. And not all cars/vans had one. Some vans were fitted with an under-dash heater which was different again.
