Hi, I've just put my '66 Cooper back on the road after major overhaul of suspension and brakes including fitting "S" hubs, new ball joints, cv joints, bearings, track rod ends, brake pipes metal and flexi. I am getting a strange clicking/scrunching sound when braking and to a lesser extent when decelerating. My thinking initially was excessive toe out and that the noise was from the tyres but that is not the case. Some years ago I fitted nylon/roller bearing inner couplings and this is the first time the car has been driven with them. Could these have dried out? I saw a post from a member who made a video of his problem and it sounds exactly the same however he experienced it only whilst reversing. I'll find a link to it. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Here is the link to the post I mentioned. He said that replacing the cv joints solved it but I have two brand new cv joints. Anyway it's not that type of noise. Stumped. https://www.theminif...e-when-rolling/

Might it be the boot ties rubbing against the hub?

Problem is solved. It turns out it was the brakes which is hardly surprising given that the noise occurred when braking. I jacked it up and sat it on the ball joints so's the drive shafts would be normally aligned. I was able to reproduce the clicking but could not see the reason. I then remembered that when fitting the discs I didn't bother cleaning them. I removed the pads and the clicking stopped. The pads were extremely shiny. I sanded them and cleaned the discs with brake cleaner. Problem solved. It seems that whatever preservative in combination with the extreme heat had glazed everything resulting in sticky surfaces that created this really weird noise. I've been working on minis for years and have never come across this problem before. Thank you for your comments.
