Gday . I have just been replacing the bearings and ball joints on my 72 mk3. I have noticed that the small retaining springs that connect to the front of the shoe and the wheel cylinder are missing. Looking at other photos online, some had them and some didn't. Can someone enlighten me as to their requirement

These are the ones for double front cilynder as your car:

I think all drum pads need it's retaining spring, otherwise the pads could no return after pressing the pedal.

Rear springs are different.

They all had the Beehive Springs, linking the Shoes to the Cylinder Pistons.

They are fitted for 2 reasons;-

1)    When adjusting the Shoes, they 'drag' the Piston along with the shoe as the Stop for the Shoe is not the Cylinder Assembly, but the Adjuster

2)    To keep the Piston in contact with the Shoes. It is very possible for the Pistons to retract back in to the Cylinders with normal road vibration, especially for the Trailing Cylinders

The Rears are different in that the Adjuster for these is at the other end of the Shoes and so the stop for the Shoes at the Cylinder End is the Pistons butting up to each other.

It's not a wise idea to run without them.

Too true that they are needed. I left them out by mistake on one side and while braking in reverse the shoe disengaged from the piston . Suddenly a soft brake pedal and poor brakes.

Thanks for all the advice. Since then I have bit the bullet and bought a disc conversion kit. Makes sense I feel as the old drums seem to have been on there forever without any maintenance.
