Annoyingly got the mini sorted and decided I'm gonna sell, drove it today to a meet and was fine all the way there and almost back until the clutch decided not to engage.

Got home luckily and got the wok cover off and found that the brand new Keystay had ground itself down and I don't get how? The lock tab for the flywheel bolt as seemed to have moved even though it was torqued up and then hammered the tab.

What has gone wrong? I know a new Keystay is needed now but I don't understand how it's happened in the first place!

Most likely not fitted correctly.

Not fitted correctly or not torqued down properly.

The locktab is not hammered to the flat of the keyway. There is a gap beetween the nut and flywheel, I think it should be tight.

I believe you tightened the nut but it seems it was loosen.

It wasn't tight enough.

Noted that you torqued it down, but if the flywheel wasn't seated properly on the crank tail, as highlighted by gaspen above, then with vibration from running, it would have quickly lost any tightness on the bolt. There could be a whole host of reasons as to why the flywheel wasn't seated.

Damn, well I'm a tool! I just followed guides saying torque it to 150nm. I've tried undoing the flywheel nut but it just spins the whole crankshaft and the flywheel can moved freely so trying to wedge it doesn't stop the crankshaft spinning, any ideas on that?

You are going to have to fiddle it so you can get some purchase with the key way. Or get something into the key way to hold the parts together.

at a guess you miss aligned the slot as they are off set.

The thought of a screwdriver popped into my head as you must of write this! I reckon that's what I've done wrong, just hope I've not done any damage to the flywheel, clutch or pressure plate!

The clutch, pressure plate and diaphragm are less than 2 weeks old

You can lock the flywheel with a BIG screwdriver or with a crowbar. But you have to remove the starter motor first.

Yes done this but because the Keystay has broke it doesn't work. I've come up with an idea I will try tomorrow to get it off. Thanks though

Could I also just get an idea of torque specs and stages of how to do it?

I followed a video which said 112 ftlb (152nm) for the bolt and that was it. Do I need to do something to make sure the flywheel goes further back?

Another idea for locking (picture from TMF)

An impact tool?Poke some thick rope in no4 plug hole carefully on firing stroke to lock crank.Only do this if you are reasonably confident and desperate.Steve..

Put the the flywheel on in the correct position*. See the picture's of Nick.

You will need a new locktab of course. And maybe a new keyway also.

112ftlb is correct  Torque Settings (reformatted) - Problems, Questions and Technical - The Mini Forum

After torqued the bolt hammer the locktab to the keyway AND to the bolt also ! I used to hammer the locktabs to the whole flat of the bolts/nuts.

* Is it possible that the C-ring behind the flywheel fallen off while he put on the flywheel ?

Okay, I think I see what I did wrong from this. I hammered the lock tab only to the bolt and not the Keystay 🤦🏻 will order both new and make sure I do it correctly. It's annoying as today was the first day I got it out of the estate since I bought it! Oh well, could of been a lot worse.

It's a pre verto clutch so doesn't have the C-ring.
