Hi all. I have a 1980 mini van and in the process of rebuilding it. At the moment it has the pressed front grill. I would like to fit a chrome grill to it. Can these be fitted to the pressed grill or do I have to get it cut out to take the chrome one. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It would be a shame to cover the pressed grille as it is a classic original feature of the commercial Mini Van and Pickup. When Minivan were cheap and common work vehicles some people use to cut out the fixed metal grille to ease engine access. The Mk2 onwards chrome grille would fit over the existing pressed grille so would be reversible but you would need to fit the metal bonnet front lip flange to support the top grille trim.

The earlier Mk1 grille chrome moustache would fit but the main centre Mk1 grille section may not fit over the pressed panel grille very well as it is normally set back in the recess on the saloon front panel which would sadly mean cutting out the panel grille and devaluing your vans originalty if that bothers you.

Hopefully someone who has done this can advise you further.

Thanks for you're advice. It would be a shame to cut it out. Was hoping just to get one to put over it. Will have to have another think about it.

I have seen some neat jobs where the grille is removable, but looks original

As said the Mk2/3 onwards grille should go over it as it is surface mounted rather than recessed as long as you are ok with the later grille?

GRILLE PANEL PRESSED MINI VAN/PICKUP

"slat type front grille section for mini van which will need trimming before welding into recess of either an original damaged front panel or a saloon version.
It is sold as a grille size panel and can be fitted as such when painted with 14A7780 Mk1 surround kit for a retro look"
