Hello all,

I'm after some advice regarding a loud knocking from the rear suspension of my 73 mini. It happens over large bumps but the ride quality is great most of the time. The noise mainly comes from the r/h side. I noticed it got worse when I lowered it on the hi-los so I raised them back up and now it seems to be when I have passengers in the back.

I've recently replaced the cones, shocks (kyb gas a just) and fitted hi los with new knuckles.

The kyb's look to have quite a range of travel but I wonder if they might still be bottoming out? Maybe I need shortened shocks. I don't run the car very low these days with at least three fingers clearance between tyre and lip of arch. It was two fingers before and the knocking was terrible!

The exhaust is well attached and doesn't move or foul on anything.
The battery is tied down well .
I still get the banging with the spare wheel removed.

Any suggestions or advice would be great. The mini is on 10" wheels

Did you fit new nylon cups with the knuckles??

 

Are the radius arms in good order??

 

Are the shocks fitted correctly on the tower and tightened properly??

Yes, new cups in for the knuckles and I didn't have any noticeable play in the radius arms

The shocks have all the correct bushes and washers installed. The double nuts have been tightened correctly.

Ok, next on the list, subframe trunnions, are the rubbers in good order??

 

Mmm and just a thought, how much clearance between the subframe and the floor where the bump stop mounts??

I've ordered subframe bushes as my next step as I can see they might be 1973 originals.

I don't believe it has rear bump stops fitted. The rear of the subframe is very close to the boot floor in front of the rear valance.

The banging is a lot worse when the car is loaded or the hi los lowered

Not something coincidental like a loose battery bouncing?

 

Loudest knock I've experienced was the upper shocker mounting giving way to rust.
