Hi - so one of my outer CV joint boots has slipped off. The boot seems in great condition, the clamp just seems to have given way. Is it necessary to take the whole CV off to reclamp/secure it, or is there a cunning way to get it back on without removing everything? The boot doesn't seem very flexible at first look. It is a hydrolastic, 7.5 disc brake setup. Thanks

Hi Slabber and welcome to the forum,
It might be possible to get the boot back on and reclip it while it's on the car. You'll need to jack it up (place a stand under it), and remove the wheel, from there, remove the Brake Caliper and hang that off some wire. At this point, you'll want to grab your jack again and place it under the ball joint nut, then carefully jack the arm up so that you can get the drive shaft fairly straight, but be careful while doing this so it doesn't come off the stand. Then you should be able to get the boot back over the CV.
I'd suggest using tie wire to hold it on. The Nylon Cable Ties are no good as they don't allow the boot to seal and also, the head on them is usually too big, so the foul on the hub and cause the boot to come off.
Before putting the boot on, you'll want to have a look inside the CV (you'll need a mirror) to check it still has grease in it and it's not got dirt in there.
I'll add here, that when this has occurred for me to repair, I've always taken the hub off the car (it's only a few more steps) and done them on the bench. I feel more comfortable working this way and can see so much more. Also, when the boot comes off, it usually makes a mess from the grease, to it makes it easier to clean up the hub and also inside the wheel arch.

Hey Spider - thanks for answering and advice.
Tried Plan A and failed. The Boot, whilst in very good nic and undamaged, seems way too small at the large end, and the rubber has practically no "give" in it to fit over the hub. It misses by a country mile infact! Begs the question how it ever fitted in the 1st place.
So Plan B it is, Hub is coming off.

The boot maybe old ? They can get hard with age, in which case, possibly, if you got it on and clipped up, it would likely come right off again, the first time you turned a corner.

How far has the boot slid along the drive shaft?? Its possible it has slipped along the shaft although there is a groove in the shaft that when the boot is positioned correctly should prevent this from happening.
The correct metal type clamp (as in the link) once installed correctly should never come off. I bought the correct crimping tool to install mine.

Cheers for the info.
Yes I have the metal band. Should there be a metal band for both ends, drive shaft end as well?
And how many times should the large metal band loop around? It seems long enough to at least go round twice?
Sonikk4, do you have a link for the crimping tool so I know what to look for?

I’ll have a look for the details for the crimping tool although have also used side cutters (carefully) in the past, and yes I did have them at both ends. Mine all came together when I bought the drum to disc conversion if memory serves me right.
