Hi All.

Thought i might ask as some of you have imported mini's from europe.

My in laws are offering us their old (1960 175cc moped). It's currently in Slovakia registered to them.

Does anyone have any experience with registering these to use in UK.

If its not too much hassle I might hire a van for the week and bring it over whilst visiting them next year.

It going to be for me to use I already have a full bike licence.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks

Far from being an expert, but I think it might need an IVA if it has no registration documents.

That's only if you want to ride it on the road - you'd only save  20 quid on road tax, so look at the insurance first to see if it'd be worth your while.

Last year it would have been easy. Now it might not be that simple.

there will be import papers to fill in and payments made just to get it into the UK.

PLEASE talk to the DVLA and to someone who understands the new regulations. I would also check what documents you will need to show if stopped in each different country you will be driving through.

I think he intends putting it in the van!

Doubt there'd be any issue unless it's put on the road, until then it's just private used property.

Nope. There are different rules for moving items through different countries in the EU that now have to be complied with.  IF you get stopped. And as the paperwork for the Moped will not be in his name it will be hard to claim personal goods.

and people wonder why I returned to the UK before the end of the transition period.

My (British but Germany-resident) English teacher over here applied for German passport early enough and now got double nationality. At least he can vote now at the elections.

Thanks for reply.

Yes it will be for private use for my self. The idea was to chuck it in a van and bring it back. Then take my time to register it.

Its currently registered in Slovakia under my in laws name. Just not sure how to formerly  sign it over to us as its not as easy as filling  in a log book with my UK address.

From doing some google search looks like I need to notify HMRC first and pay any taxes before I get the go ahead to register it with DVLA.

Hopefully being more than 40 years old I can by pass a few steps.

Was stated as only possible if you got citizenship before end of transition. As DE does not allow dual with none EU countries. But that may have changed since.

Hence the go talk to someone that knows. As you will be transporting goods through many countries that you will need to comply with as a non EU citizen. You will then need to fill in the papers to bring it into the UK and pay any duties at the border.

seriously go and talk to a specialist. Or just risk it.

the least risk will be to collect it from somewhere in France.

Speak to HMRC first, there shouldn't be any tax to pay on a free gift of used property, as far as I'm aware. Diplomats & the military were doing that, returning from overseas postings, for longer than there's been an EU. Up until you reach the channel wouldn't you just be moving an EU citizen's property from one EU country to another for them? The same as any courier or removals firm, but without the complexity of money changing hands.

Ok, I've done it with motorhomes in the past it's fairly easy but a little more expensive now than before.

You need to pay VAT on anything that comes in now, no difference if it was a gift, cast down from the heavens or you got it for free ...VAT and duty on everything.

You should pay VAT and maybe customs duty at the border - ......'Any motor vehicle over 30 years old is automatically eligible for import duty relief and a reduced rate of VAT. (You will usually be asked to provide documentary evidence, such as a copy of an insurance letter/certificate stating that it has or is an offer for 'classic car insurance')'

You then need to apply for a NOVA certificate....thats a five min process.

Then get a UK MOT on it, this will be based on VIN number - no need to change the speedo and on most bikes just mask the LHD headlight kick-up pattern.

Fill out the DVLA registration forms, pay the fee and send the NOVA details, and MOT details to them, then wait a few weeks and you will get a V5C.

No need for insurance or anything like that, but you can insure on the vin, supply that at the same time to the DVLA and they will tax it too at the same time.

I know people who bring bikes back in vans and do not declare them at the border ...but why take a chance ....border security and the customs and revenue are not people to mess about with, once you faff them about you will get stopped every time and HMRC have almost unlimited powers to investigate you.
