Valuation wise if it's in bits and needs a rebuild maybe £150 at a big push?

It's a stroked 998 and they are at most worth may £150 if complete and sitting on a box.

The difference between the 998 and 1098 is the crank and pistons. Rods are the same. A viable, cheaper alternative to a 1275. You'll have more power than a 998 in standard for and with a decent head and cam you can expect in the region of 70bhp. These engines are increasing in value so I think £150 is on the low side.

Well, at least I'm the only person to actually put a valuation on it?

Cheers domcr250,if a 1275 doesnt come up at a normal price then maybe get the 1098 done.

Just a thought, but if you can still find the pistons, you can over-bore a 1098 to +100 thou which gives about 1180cc.

With a 12G940 head and the block pocketed you could have a very nice engine with 1275 power at well below what a 1275 would cost to buy and rebuild.

In fact, I intend to build one to that spec next year and try it in a 998 Cooper replica which my Grandson has. I reckon an Evo001 cam, Aldon 'yellow' dizzy, everything balanced with a lightened flywheel, head gas-flowed and twin HS2's, etc., it should go well.

You can go to 68mm with a set of Keith Calver's pistons which will give you 1218cc. The overbore has to be offset, similar to a 1275 going to 1380.

Whilst I would never offset bore a 1275 to get 1380, due to the increasing rarity of those block, offset boring a 998 would not be a problem as they are so plentiful.

With a fairly mild cam, think of the huge torque that would be available.

I think I'll build one next year!

I'm currently rebuilding my 1220 with a 12g940 gas flowed head and a AC Dodd RS+ cam, i'm looking forward to having it on the road early part of next year. I'll let you know how it pulls but I'm expecting some good torque figures. Teamed with a straight cut gearset it'll be an interesting engine set up not to everyones fancy but i like something a bit different to the norm
