Well, I need help again. I have searched this forum for hours and looked at a great many pictures of the scuttle and the support piece. But I can not make the parts I have fit like they should. I know how it's all supposed to fit together but for some reason these parts won't do what they should. Or, maybe I just don't understand yet.

I hope the pictures help you see my problem. These are Magnum parts.

It is not a jigsaw, some amount of "fettling" is required to achieve nirvahna.Dress it to shape,Steve..

LOL!

Steve, somehow I just knew that would be at least one of the responses. "Fettling" is a word that I'm getting used to using. It's the same word I use on the TR3. It needs a LOT of fettling just like this Mini.

I'll start dressing now. Thanks again.

It seems your old scuttle isn't cut by the shape of the repair panel. Right ?

Until you trial-fit the repair panel above the old one it won't be in its final position, which affects the next panel's fitment. In my opinion,

Happy fettling !

You are fighting an uphill battle with Magnum parts, notoriously rubbish fit.

I dont think the edge of the closing panel is meant to meet the edge of the scuttle. The closing panel tends to stick out a fair bit beyond the scuttle edge. As said above, as they are all pattern panels its a case of moving them round and fettling to fit.

I think I got it. I fussed, I fidgeted, I fettled and figure it's as close as it's gonna get. What I now don't like is the rather sharp crease that runs along scuttle part. On the left side of the car that same area has more of a radius. I wonder what is correct?

By the way this is a 1978.

The wing is probably low at this point because it's just held in place with vise grips. The shape of that scuttle repair piece is going to need some hammer and dolly work to knock into a better shape. I'll keep on fettling.

Thanks for the pictures Niel. I have a 1969 Mini that is next in line after this one so I'll look at that scuttle to see if I can somehow copy it. However, it's quite possible that it has been repaired with body filler. It's even more rusty than this 78.

A little hammer and dolly work and the scuttle is looking better. However, I'm not thrilled with the gap between the wing and the scuttle. It's about 4MM +/-. And the arc of the scuttle doesn't match the wing. There would be no way to weld such a gap.

The return on the back of the wing, i would flatten that down to see if you can close the gap. Also the radius as the rear of the wing to A panel looks very rounded and should be sharper.

The thing is like i said earlier the Magnum scuttle ends are crap and really do not form the correct shape. I understand a lot of members reluctance to buying a full Heritage scuttle but the time saved over continually trying to obtain the right contour with a Magnum one in my eyes is worth the cost. Plus you will be surprised at how much rust lurks under the scuttle to dash rail flange.

And just to add to the mix, when i was trying to fit the right hand wing to the Red one in my signature, i tried to section the rear of the wing to see if i could get a decent fit and ended up scrapping the wing, it was that bad and yes it was a Magnum one.

When i did a full front end on Wills Mini Special with all Heritage panels it was a pure joy to do as it needed minimal fettling.

LOL. I'm somewhere in between. I have more time than I did in the past but still not enough. There are other projects (honey do) that get in the way. I have more cash than I did in the past but have a burning desire to save as much as I can.

We'll get there eventually.
