Brake Master Cylinder - Plastic - Leaks All The Time

Best Answer postve , 09 November 2021 - 07:54 PM

I personally feel the list is not inclusive enough as one of them is outside of the "date-code" but exact same symptoms  - total junk.  Good thing is I can make out the faulty part number and sending it right back - at their expense of course.

Hey Guys,

Truly frustrated as third plastic brake master and every damn one of them leaked and all brand new to boot;
  • All new brake hoses
  • Bleed correctly

Been through everything I could but consistent leaking - anyone experience the same or suggestions? I believe it is leaking down the bottom of the cylinder as drivers side wet under pedals after a drive and or I bring it home and let it sit. Basically lose almost 3/4 of the fluid after driving around for an hour - might just have to go back to steel ones but there has to be a fix for this???

Below is after 30 minutes and was full??????

There was a recall on some master cylinders not too long ago. I can't recall which ones were effected or what the issue was. Just wondering if yours maybe from that batch ?

Sounds like the piston seal is not sealing? Any sign of fluid outside the reservoir, on bulkhead or just above foot pedals inside cabin?

Maybe a new piston seal kit would correct it. But if the piston bore is the issue you'd need to hone it.

Gasket sealer won’t fix it - it has to be a piston seal that’s failing. 3 on the bounce is awful - I hope you’re sending them back to the supplier.
Metal ones are readily available - MiniSpares has them in stock.

I had to replace the same style master cylinder we had on the clutch as it was weeping fluid from the plastic join on the reservoir. Swapped it like for like, we’ll see if it’s a long term manufacturing fault…

You better believe I am sending all three back as bought on my AMEX just in case I get grief - found the link for the rubbish parts and thx again Spider - https://miniworld.co...safety-grounds/

Check this link if yours falls within the faulty batch, will never fix as some are totally useless; https://miniworld.co...safety-grounds/

Since the linked recall article shows both metal and plastic units affected, then just switching to a metal one may not be a solution. Also mentions secondary seal leaks are the cause, and lists the cylinder rebuild kits also affected.
Need to know if the OP's MCs are in the stated production range and if so, why is that retailer still selling them? If not in range, then the recall needs expanding to include these units.

There was a UK supplier obviously selling poor quality parts a year or two ago but these parts only seemed to end up overseas .. non-Mini parts by the way .. but doesn't make the practice acceptable.

Nice find. I had a bit of a look but couldn't find it.

By the description of the fault, you could indeed have been supplied these. Have they all come from the same supplier ?

Perhaps when sending it back, you may wish to show them this recall notice.

Checking back on the recall Notice, the faulty cylinders were in production for just over a year :ohno:
