Are either any of these dizzies any goof for a standard A+ 998?  Quality and reliability?

Not sure about those units, but I know the 123 electronic units sold by Minispares are rated well but they come at a price

It’s just I’m trying to work out if its better just buying a brand new one, which may or may not be any good and of dubious quality.

Or finding a used original local 59d dizzy that isn’t knackered (trying to with ignored messages or just told ‘to buy new’) and converting it to electronic, so also having the option of switching back to points at the roadside if needed.

It’s only a bog standard 998 with standard air filter/box, cast-iron manifold, pea shooter exhaust. As my current electronic dizzy is wrong for the engine and has other issues.

You'll still need to get the dizzy recurved to suit your engine anyway so personally I'd send your current dizzy to AC Dodd and get it rebuilt, converted to electronic and recurved to suit.

Just my thoughts from experience

I’ve already have a 64md electronic dizzy, but for some reason with the vacuum advance connected I’m getting full max advance between from idle to 2k. And I think also causing a vacuum leak through the vacuum advance unit/dizzy.

Running it with the vacuum advance blocked off has helped, but it’s still not running right.

Send that to AC Dodd to get a rebuild and recurve, it's cheaper than you think and you know it'll be plug and play

I used the Powerspark dizzy when i converted Paddy's 998 A series engine. Went in, started up straight away and after a minor tweak ran spot on. No recurving required.

Which is more the answer/reply I was looking for.

Or, it didn’t/had to be modified to fit, the advance curve was way off for it to run or failed etc.

Pricing up its works out about the same to buy a used/unknown (of course the sellers going to claim it’s ok) dizzy than it does for to buy a new one, and then the same on top for the electric conversion.

As the only spare dizzies I have are one for an a plus that won’t fit, and a ducellier that was originally on the car. (and won’t be refitted anytime soon)

There is also Accuspark, which is very very similar.

Find a decent used distributor, send it off to AcDodd for re-curve and refurbishment. You’ll be money ahead and pleased with the result.

Stick with the 65dm4 but ask either AC Dodd to sort it or use H&H Ignition to check it over and recurve it.

I had a Powerspark fitted to my Minor for a while and it was good. I swapped it over to my Commer camper after a couple of years (Minor under resto) and it lasted another couple of years until the module failed. I've had a few of the modules fail on me, the one that lasted the longest was the original Simonbbc one and that was in for just under ten years. When the Minor is finished I'll be looking at the Distributor Doctors range and will probably go back to points on that car.
