OK, I've found that the slot in the new layshaft I've got is not quite as deep as the original (0.170" new layshaft compared to 0.193" on the original layshaft). This small difference results in the locking plate not falling into the correct position to allow the bolt to pass through!.

You can just see the witness mark left by the old layshaft when the plate is as far in as it will go.

Before I start grinding a bit off the locking plate; have other people experienced this problem? Don't want to have missed something silly.

Yes, the last layshaft I got from MED had a similar issue - the slot was too narrow - so I took a fine file to the slot and opened it up just enough to fit the plate.

Seems your choices are to modify the plate or the shaft, but either will do the trick. There's little force on this plate so it's not a critical dimension.

OK, thanks - I'm not alone then.
I was debating between making the slot in the layshaft deeper or cut down the locking plate; sounds like making the layshaft slot deeper is the way you went - not sure how hard the layshaft is?

i went the other way and took a small amount off the plate, but if i had to do it again i'd probably do as Magneto did just because there's less material to remove
