Hello,

I've installed and measure the clearance and I have about 19 thou.  The bearing appears to be fully home, I see you can only get 4 and 2 thou shims.  Is this sort of gap normal?  Here's a photo if something is wrong

So let me get this right you are fitting the retainer and are measuring a gap of about 1/2mm? That sounds a lot.

Yes, 19 thou, 0.48 mm. That's my concern.  I am sure the bearing is home but can continue to whack it.  Bearing is a RHP from Minispares

You might be able to just see if the bearing retaining circlip is hard up against the case if it's fully home. In your picture it seems to be just still visible from that angle - so may need to go a tad further in... Just been playing this game myself

Yes, the diff side is more exposed but the circlip from the front looks fully home.  I've again given it a few more whacks but it sounds fully home.  The bearing is visible, from the top, next to 1st.  I see they used to make 10 thou shims but no longer.  I am happy to shim it, hell, I could even get the retainer milled but just wanted to ask whether others have seen this.  I can't appear to get the bearing any further in.

The Clips flex. With that in mind, when you've measured the gap, have you done up the bolts ? They don't want to be done up hard, but enough to get to the limit of the C Clip flex. You'll feel it when you're there.

Hi, I did them finger tight, then a nip, no more.  I can see the retainer is on the outer race of the main bearing

I've fitted some old shims under the retainer and now I have 9 thou clearance. Here's a shot from above - the bearing looks fully home to me

From what I can see, it does look like the bearing is home.

The shims come (or did come ?) in 0.005", 0.007", 0.009", 0.011" and 0.015".

Minispares only have 2 or 4 thou.  I've ordered some 15 thou shimming steel and see if I can make one.

In the very first shot you posted the retaining clip which sits in the groove in the bearing seems to be just visible through the diff aperture which is why I thought it could go in a bit further! The clip on mine sits down a bit further in a machined recess in the casing web. Yours obviously sits differently.

I don't know what's going on with the bearing shims available from ANY supplier, since the table for fitment contains ODD increments but as you say there's only 0.002" and 0.004" available. Interestingly the 0.010" some quote appears to have the same part number as 0.004" and the 0.002" on the Minispares site states that Rover used to quote this as 0.003" but the drawing said 0.002" so that's what they made.

So here's the table from the manual which jumps in 2thou ODD steps..

When gap is Use shims totalling
0.005 to 0.006 0.005
0.006 to 0.008 0.007
0.008 to 0.010 0.009
0.010 to 0.012 0.011
0.012 to 0.014 0.013
0.014 to 0.015 0.015

Yours is a later casing (mine's a remote box 1128) whether that makes a difference to the appearance I do not know.  My bearing is fully  home now, I guess my retainer has a little bit more meat on it, hence touching the box.  If I had another, I'd try it but they are NLA and there's none on ebay.  Looking around and reading old posts, once I get the appropriate shims I'll be happy.  I've ordered what Minispares have and see what turns up.  I'll have a go at making one too, how hard can it be?? :gimme:

I just went looking for the part numbers of the 6 Shims mentioned in the workshop manual, in the parts books, I looked back as far as 1961 (which was a different shim anyway) to the mid 80's, there's only ever been 2 thickness shims available.

In the end, made a 15 thou shim from some shimming steel.  Now all shimmed up perfectly :mrcool:
