Please can anyone tell me what socket size is needed for this nut? It’s so long ago that I removed it and, appearing not to have one that fits, can’t remember what I used back then. Thanks in advance chaps.

Thanks for your reply GraemeC. I don’t think I have a socket or spanner in that size so thought a 24 might do but it seemed a lot smaller than the difference of 1.4. Not to worry I’ve faced bigger problems than this before now! Thanks again.

A 1" AF Spanner, as Graeme suggest can usually be snugged on but is a firm fit, as the Hex is 1.010" AF (I have one spanner set that won't fit). The actual spanner for these is 9/16" BSW (British Standard Whitworth).

Nice interesting fact their Spider! I've always used a 1" socket and thought the tight ones were just down to paint etc.

The caps aren't usually particularly tight and a decent adjustable spanner normally works fine.  I expect you'd also 'get away with' a 26mm socket/spanner although that may also be a rare size to have in your arsenal.

I 'got on to it' as all my 1" AF stuff is very snug and when I measured a cap, it's just over 1".

I might have a 26 mm socket, but my metric spanners finish at 24 mm (15/16" AF - shhhhhhh :D  ).

I do have a very big set of Whit Spanners and Sockets.

From memory - and I may well be off the mark on this one - the Thread for these is 3/8" BSPP and I think that's why they are a Whit sized hex.
