What is the best grade or brake fluid and coolant for the MPi? I know there is a lot of disagreement with the Rover manual on the type especially the coolant color.

Coolant color has little to do with anything as different makers use different colors.

the main difference is the metals they protect/react with. The reason things changed with the MPi was the inclusion of the aluminum radiator. In the past the alloy parts were allowed to corrode as they were quite Massive. The introduction of the thin alloy rad meant that the alloy had to be protected.

I would and do use Prestone. It is green

brake fluid use DOT 3 or 4 or 5.1 it does not matter they are all mixable. If you have an other car that uses one or the other use the same.

This is a TB from 2000, but there was on going changes to coolant up to 2006 (or 2007?) as they had issues from the alloy radiator;-

Dot 4.
Any ethylene glycol should do, with the correct dilution. 😁

with any alloy rads use an OAT antifreeze this protects against corrosion of rad. do not use with older brass/copper rads as can attack the solder and lead to leaks. if using ethylene/glycol then should change annually to protect rad. Cast iron engine ok with either. colour is juat a dye and guide only, oat usually red or orange

re. brake fluid have used both dot4 and 5.1 silicone ok and all brake fluids can be mixed. dot 5.1 won't strip your paint but is not hydroscopic so if hot (race apps.) can vapour lock,

Dot 5 is silicone based and will not mix correctly with glycol based fluids (Dot 3, 4 & 5.1). When changing from one to the other the system should be fully flushed.

Dot 5.1 WILL strip your paint, Dot 5 won't.

You also need to change the seals on every part.

According to this I should stay with the green SuperPlus 3 type coolant but that's not an OAT coolant

What is the coolant capacity of the Mpi? What is the expected change for a flush? I'm reading 4-5 L

Yes as Nic says!

mixing dot 5.0 with anything else will screw the seals, they swell up causing binding, and in severe cases may split,

Also watch out for the LHM fluid as used in citroens, as this causes the same kind of issues, Ive seen the LHM stuff in VERY similar bottles to brake fluid with brake fluid in big letters and LHM or mineral marked further down could be easily confused if your not wise to it.

LHM is a mineral oil. Very similar to Shimano and Magura Cycle disc brake fluid.

I know this comment will send people nuts but I have the waterless coolant in mine. Runs great on it. Did a two drive the other day and temp sat perfectly. Also had the obd plugged in to get all the readings. I know people are for and against but I wanted to give it a go and so far so good.
