Hi guys, noob here, need a little help please if poss.  Searched for ages but nothing similar.

94 SPi.  When accelerating have started to hear a loud "crack" noise for a second, as if the engine is hitting the firewall.

I havent had a chance to have a good look yet underneath, but is it likely to be an engine mount, bush or something like that?  Any pointers for my investigation would be welcome.

Thanks!

Engine steady bushes and engine mounts are the first to check as they will be the most likely culprits.

Possibly corrosion / cracking of the toe board where the rear engine mounts are bolted into.

Engine moving usually makes a thump noise. The floor can crack around at the toe panel where the subframe mounts sit below the heater. Pull back the carpet and have a look.

^^^
I meant to say subframe mounts to toe board, not engine mounts. You'll need to get under the car and / or lift the carpet back in the footwell.

My car did that. It was the lower rear subframe mount, mounted on the toe board. Same as mentioned above. Mine was only cracked on the drivers side (right). If you remove the carpets from the front, you can inspect. To repair, I welded the crack and added a supporting plate to the inside, and then removed the subframe mount and welded up the crack on the outside. Been solid ever since.

Yep! Mine broke there as well! Sheared right off. Turns out it was down to my flywheel not being properly balanced and the clutch disk grenading its cushion springs....long story.

Would be a good idea to check over all your engine mounts and steadies. Make sure the engine mount bolts are tight and have a GOOD look at the upper and lower engine steadies. As above they can crack. Rock the engine while shining a bright light on both and confirm its all good in the hood.

I would suggest the top engine steady mount that bolts onto the block on the left hand side about the clutch bell housing.

These are a pain in the but if you have a servo or an mpi mini as the breather and servo can get right in the way...

Depends if you believe the crack noise to come from upper engine or lower..

Think lower has been covered above.

I had the engine out when I set about fixing my upper. Mine was such a clean break it looked like that is how it came! I added up buying a reinforced bracket to replace the welded on one that bolts right in the same place. Not a ton of access from inside the car to get at the other side so I made a bracket with captured nuts to make the job a little less fiddly.

Id be interested to see what your finding are and if any of these suggestions help.

Hello,

to get from the garage to the street I have to turn three curves, then to stop before entering the street. Sometimes when leaving the clutch i had a clacking noise but didn`t know what it it could be.As well I was too lazy to pull the engine. All ended up in a brocken gearbox housing , broken diff-pin and worn differential case.Attached File  WP_20220111_10_41_34_Pro_LI.jpg   19.75K   2 downloadsAttached File  WP_20220111_10_42_04_Pro_LI.jpg   27.58K   3 downloadsAttached File  WP_20220111_10_42_46_Pro_LI.jpg   164.06K   4 downloads

At least you got to the bottom of it..

Expensive fix but at least you will know it is right from now on....

Keep the chin up...

canna take the money with you.. but you can take the memory of many miles of smiles with you when you drive a mini....

I did not want to complain about my Mini; I just wanted to show how hard it is sometimes to properly assign a noise.
