The coil hasn't been mentioned on the thread so far, but I don't know. How would I test the coil and how would a faulty coil fit in with the symptoms I've got - loud click when pressing the starter button, but no action.

Cheers.

Also, Haynes Manual instructions for removing the starter motor:

"Undo and remove the two bolts securing the starter motor to the flywheel housing, then lift the motor upwards and out of the engine compartment."

Erm......it doesn't go past the distributor!!

just taken the starter motor off and powered it straight from the battery with some jump leads - nothing. When it was on the car I got a loud click - was this the solenoid or the starter relay?

When I'm trying it with the jumpers I'm earthing off the flange and powering it through the solenoid, - is the solenoid stopping current getting to the motor? Do I need to get 12v to the spade connector too?

I'll try it and see, but in the mean time, some ideas on fully teting the motor and/or if theres anything obvious I could do to fix it, before i buy a new one, that would be appreciated?

Thanks.

right, 12v to the ignition spade connector on the solenoid fires the sprocket out, so the solenoid is fine.

But 12 volts to the main 12v connector at the same time doesn't spin the motor, well it span it once, but I can't make it repeat the feat.

WOuld I be right in thinking the motor is dead? I mentioned it earlier - there's a string like wire running between the solenoid and the motor body - does this take the positve feed to the motor? It looks a bit dodgy, is it replaceable?

Cheers.
