Hi There,

Hoping some people can shed some light on this....

I have  1992 rover mini 1275 Sprite and my wipers won't stop... so things I've tried:

1. Wipers didn't work at all so I replaced the wiper motor

2. Now the wiper motor won't stop, even when wipers are in off position at the stalk.

3. Took off Wiper Stalk and all looks okay in there and I think it matches the wiring diagrams...

4. Replaced connector and wiring into the motor and no progress there.

I think this is a faulty stalk but am unsure... The window washer/motor works fine. Settings 2 and 3 on the wiper stalk also seem fine.  Settings 1 and 2 on the wiper stalk seem to be acting the same, ie no speed change and then setting 3, the motor speeds up.

Any help would me much appreciated, been chasing this one for a few weeks now!

Cheers,

Kalvin

Thanks,

could be a fault with the park switch/circuit at the wiper motor - are the connections correct at the wiper motor ?

You've lost me a bit here - there are only two speeds, not 3.  There are 4 positions of the stalk:

Two clicks up - speed 2

One click up - speed 1

Off

Push down (spring loaded) speed 1

If the wipers don't stop when in the 'off position' then as above I'd assume the park switch is working or being triggered properly.  Was the park switch included as part of the new motor?

The whole unit is new from mini spares so could be a fault with park switch but I would hope not? Connection into wiper motor is also new so I would this isn't the fault either. New motor was tried with existing wiring and the motor wouldn't turn off.. Then I changed the wires and connector to motor with the same faults occurring.  The new wiring didn't have the same colouring as the existing wiring so could be an error here.

car > Wiper Motor

Brown/light green > Brown/White

Light Green/Orange > Green

Light Green/Black > Black

Blue/Light Green> Blue

Red/Light Green > Red

I meant 3 settings:

- off (Has the speed of Speed 1)

- speed 1 (Has the speed of speed 1)

- Speed 2 (Has the speed of Speed 2)

The spring loaded setting also has the speed of speed 1

Park switch cam new with the motor so I would hope this is okay?

I'm not intimately familiar with the UK Wiper Motor, but as others have suggested, I'd suspect the Park Switch. I can't see it being anything else.

Check that in fact the Cam in the Wiper Motor is operating the Park Switch and there's an Earth from the Park Switch to the Wiper Motor Body, check that Earth and check that the Wiper Motor Body has a good Earth on it.

If you suspect a self park switch fault try this.

My understanding of your wiring is as follows.

Blue /light green and red /light green are from the column switch.

light /green black is earth.

Light green / orange is a 12v feed from the fuse box.

Disconnecting the light green /orange should disable the self park function, the wipers should turn on, both speeds, when you operate the column switch and stop when this switch is turned off, they should just stop no matter where they are on the sweep ark.

If this is not the case then it may not be the park switch.

Hope this helps with your fault finding.

Most likely you have the wrong motor. I would suggest a close look at what you had originally and what you have now new.
Or as others have said the park switch or contqct or connection is faulty at the motor but my money is on it being the wrong motor.

Hi Weef,

I disconnected the orange and green wire:

When the wiper stalk is in the off position, the wipers are off. When they are in the speed 1 position, they are at speed 1 and when they are in speed 2 position they are in speed 2. So when I unplug this wire, the system seems to function correctly. This means a faulty park switch?

Thanks,

Kind of points to a self park switch circuit fault but to be sure what was the reason for the motor change in the first place ?.

Make sure there isn't a wear notch in the park switch trigger ramp on the back of the large cog in the motor gearbox. Also check that the pin is still working on the park switch

I bought the car about 5 months ago and when I got it, the wipers weren't working at all and the connection to the motor was all melted so I assumed the motor burnt out. Simply changing the motor and using existing wiring lead to a working motor that wouldn't turn off

Okay, looks like I sorted the problem....turns out there wasn't a problem at all! Me being the newbie that I am was testing the motor before I fitted it to the car, went to open up the motor and there's no cog in there! so the park switch isn't getting triggered at all when I was testing. Manually pressing the park switch when in the off position at the wheel is of course is turning off the wipers...

Thanks for the help!
