My garage is too big to heat (nice problem to have) and uninulated steel clad. It's still way better than working outside on a driveway in winter. That's really not fun.

Whatever you end up using be aware that sporadic heating can cause condensation.Steve..

Yeah something I've been thinking about cheers for pointing it out. Just need to figure he I can minimise it.

I have a dehumidifier running. Its only set to take the worst away. About 65%. They also produce a bit of heat as a side which may take the edge off but only a little

Be careful if it's one made in china. I had one, bought from Frances version of B&Q (group kingfisher) their own brand, but made by "GREE" a chinese company and it caught fire in my basement.

I have a couple I use for business. Had them quite a few years now.

I personally haven't tried one but when I used to be a sales rep visiting freezing cold garages and workshops all day I was always impressed when standing under or next to an Infrared heater.
They seem to warm you up without wasting a load of energy warming the air around you.

Might be worth some researching?

I have some commercial experience with these and they are very inexpensive to run. Great for heating you up in a specific space, as the original poster said not for heating the whole airspace.

As fir me though we're adding a house extension that incorporates the garage wall, so I may as well just add a big radiator and improve the garage insulation whilst I'm at it.

I solved my cold garage problem by moving to Aus.

Now I need an Aircon.

I used to use the IR heaters and they worked really well and not too expensive to run (3kw max is about 60p an hour), but my workshop was smaller, only problem is you are warm but everything you touch is still freezing.

 

Moved house, bigger workshop and poor insulation, so I then got hold of a second-hand big propane space heater a few years ago and that replaced the IR heater - it's more expensive to run (I think) but heats up everything super quickly - I run it on 47kg bottles as it's the cheapest way to buy gas, never buy from Calor but a local supplier.

 

The space heaters are priced at a premium second-hand at the moment.  Look for ones that have 110v site plugs fitted, most people don't realise they are normally dual voltage, so you get a bargain.

 

Always ventilate the space well if you are running a gas appliance.

I bought a machine mart space heater running from diesel, fantastic but you do need to keep some air running through the garage.

I have a circa 800 sq.ft. timber built (concrete floor), plywood lined and insulated (100mm rockwool) shed and have 3 x 2kw convection heaters in it. Plenty enough to keep the temp above 18 degrees when 0 deg outside, and not on constantly.
