I need to ask a question about gasket sealant. I’ve read that a smear of sealant should be used on all gaskets except for the cylinder head but in Minispares’ description of their 22A2237B (transfer case gasket) they state that sealant should not be used. I’m wondering if this has something to do with possibly upsetting the idler gear end float which I know is critical? Does anyone have any recommendations in this regard? I was intending to use sealant and allow for this when setting the end float.

Some gaskets materials need no additional sealant and that particular one sounds like it's one of them.

You're right, the gasket has the potential to alter the running clearance of the transfer idler - the factory allows a 3 thou tolerance. Smearing on sealant unevenly could also distort the fit to alter the alignment of the idler's bearings.

Be careful, the description for the 22A2237B is badly worded. They are talking about the GUG705563GM "Klinger Material" gasket that should not have sealant and only tightened to 18lbs/ft

I always use a light smear of grease - helps the gasket seal and makes them much easier to removed next time

I used general grease though just a light smear and it worked a treat!
