Dear Mini drivers...

I had to change the rear hub as the studs came loose and ruined the hub (wheels weren´t fitted proper...). Took an old hub and new bearings - no Timken as only aftermarket was available. In the old hub ball bearings had been fitted with the spacer now I fitted roller bearings. If I torque them down to 80NM they are very tight, can can turn the hub but it is not running free. Is this normal?? Does the bearings need to bed in?

Thank you so much

Ask the seller how they should be set up. If they are not Timken don’t follow the Standard Mini Instructions.

KAD only say adjust till little play then pin them.

Some after market rear bearings I tried a few years back now, they were as you describe and last less than 1000 km. I had another set, so I fitted them up with a Crankshaft Shim, these are 0.005", in between them, it ended up with a small amount of end float. I got near 5000 km from that one. I went back to Timken then never looked back.

I would get timken, I fitted a set of minispares rear bearings and they lasted 500 miles (Bearing locked up while I was doing 60mph and ended up needing to replace my radius arm, hub and tyre)

I fitted one of the cheap tapered ones and did it up will it spun nicely and put in the split pin. It was reasonably tight, just not up to spec. It’s been in the car for nearly 10 years now and I’ve probably done 50,000km with no issues. Perhaps it’s just luck of the draw with the cheaper ones

I have checked the hub again and it seems that these bearings are like the one from timmy 850. When you look at them it seems impossible that the inner faces can touch. There is a small gap, I checked it with a feeler gauge. From my experience it seems that these bearings need to by adjusted with a very little play and then pinned.

I was thinking of reusing my old timken roller bearings from the broken hub. I tried the hub again on the car and it turns freely.

I am going on a rally in snowy Austria in february, the route is around 800km  and I don´t want a seized hub....

What would you think?

Swap the Timkens onto the new hub.

If the used Timkens are in good order, while not ideal, I'd run with them.

Had another old hub in the garage and put the old bearings in today. Looks and feels perfect on the car. Now I have a spare with the "new" bearing. With my next order to Minispares I will get a new set of Timkens.

Thank you very much
