OK, I know this has been asked before:-

https://www.theminif...ap-orientation/

...but I'm a bit confused.

Austin Rover Repair Manual AKM3656 states "space out the piston ring gaps around the non thrust side of the piston". Google search for piston thrust side throws up "on the left when the crank rotation is clockwise" - therefore the non-thrust side in a Mini is the back right??? But in the thread I reference above it seems to state the opposite!!!

Am I thinking about this the totally wrong way???

You may not be thinking of which end of the engine is the front.

Isn't the front piston number 1, the radiator end; so rotation viewed from that end is clockwise - thrust side front of car (or should I be looking at it from the other end somehow - see my confusion?) ??? Don't want to open a can of worms here - I'm probably over-thinking this.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much - just space the gaps around the piston. They’ll move in use anyway.

Been some interesting reading there. And I think most of it is not thinking about the rings but the piston. The thrust surface they seem to be talking about is below the pin. The rings are above the pin. I always did one to dizzy side and the others equally either side. But as Graham says they will move.

yeah, I just do them by eye, 120deg apart ( assuming a 3 ring piston), as said they will move
