Slightly Bent Gear Selector Rod

Best Answer Spider , 23 January 2022 - 05:59 PM

Just make sure the length is the same, the holes are the same distance apart and parallel to each other.
Can’t remember the hole diameter - think it’s 1/4” but spider will confirm.

I have trouble remembering myself these days !

7/32"

My gear selector rod is very slightly bent at the last 10mm or so where it attaches to the collar/roll pins at the gearbox end, is that normal? Nothing else looks damaged which is why I'm wondering if that's the way it's supposed to be.

If not I don't suppose anyone can confirm the part number for a new rod I've tried searching for gear selector, gearstick connection rod etc but coming up with nothing and Im sure I remember seeing it as a spare at one point

Could probably straighten it but might deform the pin holes and I'm guessing it's probably a cheap part

Cheers

Are you sure its bent and not just "wobbling" on the roll pin collar? The Rod is straight at that point as far as I recall but shaped further back away from the collar. Do you have a pic to show us?

yeah it's definitely bent, it's only slight though:

maybe I'm just over worrying about it, it's not like these cars are highly precision engineered are they lol

The Rod you have is pretty worn, bend aside, I'd be replacing it for that reason.

Somerfords have them listed (or last time I looked), but they weren't genuine and only in Mild Steel, which is not ideal here.

One solution is to turn the rod over, end for end, if the part that will slide in the bush (in the housing) is in reasonable condition.

^^^ I've just swapped ends as above and it works fine. The yoke and bearings were badly worn too and I replaced these at the same time.

They're not difficult to make, but you really need a pillar drill to get the holes accurate.  An engineering shop should make one for you without much hassle and shouldn't cost much.

That's a really good point I don't know why that didn't occur to me, I've got a semi decent milling machine that drills good straight holes

Thanks I should be able to take a dimension from the new roll pins when they arrive in a few days, I've ordered the punch tool as well, why not

The long story is, for what is worth.. we were pulling the engine and everything else was disconnected except my gear linkage as the roll pins would not budge, whatever I did, I had the right side punch, I was trying in all different gear positions, on both pins.. in the end I just cut it and ordered a new complete gear selector on ebay for 30 quid plus postage

The one that turned up has this very slightly bent rod which is a bit annoying because that's the only bit I really wanted, but that's how the cookie crumbles I guess, it still means I can rebuild it and use the best parts of both

So if I can make a new rod myself that would be nice to save a bit of cost but it's not the end of the world either way

Actually for now I used the linisher and smoothed it off slightly so it's 'straight' but thinner on one side by about 1.5mm

I can't see the hole alignment being an issue due to there being loads of wobble in the thing anyway

But still I it won't be going back in for a while until bodywork is done which is probably most of this year so there's no real rush

There's a good thread on the detail of fabricating your own rod. I've looked for it but I can't seem to work the search function? The bushes are simple to replace and cheap.

This I think is the thread you were thinking of ?

https://www.theminif...-change-rattle/

(The search function was working about to about a week back, but is on the fritz again. From Google if you type in The Mini Forum: Rod shift bushes (or what ever yr looking for), you can use that as a search function).
