Got an odd issue with a 1990 Mini City Auto.

When starting sometimes the starter motor turns over just fine, sometimes I just get a click, if I get the click if I keep trying eventually the motor starts up. Occasionally when the motor is running, it suddenly stops.

The starter motor is a new unit, as I thought the old one was duff (when through the haynes manual check list, and things like the lights dimmed when the key was turned etc.)

Battery is charged and relatively new. Starter motor is new. Interlock isn't the issue as you don't get the click if its in gear.

Any idea's on what to inspect and check?

Thanks in advance.

Is it the correct starter? There are two different gears with different numbers of teeth. get the wrong one and occasionlly it could jam on the flywheel

The click could be a failing starter solenoid or relay, the engine stopping could be a variety of things probably unrelated?

Agree with JohnR. You have two separate issues, one sounds like an ignition problem, the other with the starter system. I had an intermittent slow start problem that was traced to a bad solenoid-I took it apart and was amazed that any current was getting through at all, that’s how corroded the contacts were. I’d also have a peek at the ground strap connection.

Yes, by engine stopping, I mean the starter will cut out mid trying to start. Its not starting well at the moment, because its cold and doesn't get alot of driving anyway. But once the engines going it's fine and doesn't cut out.

I believe so, the new unit and old unit look identical (one being alot cleaner than the other however.) I didn't count the teeth however.

Thanks both, i'll inspect the solenoid and the ground strap and hope that solves the issue.
