Just got a couple of ball joint rebuild kits from my local supplier.
One of the "socket caps" seems to have some sharp edges and roughness, sufficient that the swivel action of the stud is heavily impaired. Should this just be ground down with a dremel or should it be considered defective and returned?

Research "lapping in ball joints" seems a little bodgy but effective.Steve..

Yes have heard of that. But thought it was done on already normally shaped components to give even better performance. This one I have basically prevents any swivel action when just lightly placing the two parts together, no pressure on them. Not sure lapping will help but willing to have a go.

The retailer has informed me he will be sending out a replacement anyway.

Sadly, most ball joints available these days don't seem to be 'fitable' out of the bag as they once were, the OEM items had a ground finish, where as the commonly available items I've seen look to be a turned finish, I guess the grind finish is now left to who ever is doing the fitting. I've also found they don't have a hard case like the originals.

Just to put it out there, while many of us know of the sealed maintenance free joints out of Japan, they also have some 'OEM' type ball joints. I bought and fitted these up to a friend's car. They had a ground finish and to me, seemed every bit as good as the originals. Somewhere in the next few months, I'll be inspecting them, I'm quite keen to see how they are fairing.

Possible for you to send me your feedback direct about the OEM ball joints?

Yup. Have seen these quite a while back. But they work out to over $80 (CAD) per joint....whereas rebuild kits run about $20 for a pair.

I just recently fitted a set to my own car. These come with limited grease in them and from David's webpage, it's recommended to grease them in the normal way on fitting, but that should be the only greasing they need - I dare say for normal usage.

I did machine up a blank to take the place of the spring in the lower joint otherwise as I saw it, the 'plastic' seat will have next to nothing to seat on.

And yes, I'll be sure to give a review once I've done some miles (kms !!) on them.

Always make sure your balls are well lubricated and free to move when required.

Good result on supplier sending replacement.... almsot and admission of guilt.

ClassicMiniJapan also now offering heavy duty shimmable balljoints:

https://classicminis...em-ball-joints/

Still pricey at 10,780 YEN...($120 CAD) per pair. Unclear but presumably this is before shipping/duty etc.
