Got new engine put in car and starting to run in. 998 CC, with cooper garages  head and twin carbs.

The head was low mileage but had new valves put in due to damage caused when last engine expired.

Anyway, running in as per instructions, and just started taking up to 3500 rpm , after not going above 3000.

Got up to heady speeds of 60mph for first time on new engine, but now its started spluttering and had total loss of power and car wouldn't start.

Called AA, but due to long wait i tried turning engine again to see if i could go the 100 yards down the road to the pub car park, for safety.

Car started first time , and sounded fine. So cancelled AA , and drove the 4 miles home. But car still seems to occasionally splutter and loose power when throttle opened.

Sounds fine on idle when revved thru to 3500, only seems to happen under strain .

Anyone ideas ' could it be blocked fuel line, as tank was empty for a few months while waiting for work to be done. ?

It does sound like a fuel issue.

I'd probably start by checking the fuel filter, then fuel pressure and delivery quantity.

okay went wonky again today.  It does act as though its running out of fuel. The more accelerator you use, the less power there is until it dies. Then after about 20 minutes it seems to work again, though it happened twice todfay

I know it's a 'back to basics' question, but is the vent hole in the fuel cap blocked?

Next time it dies, whip the fuel cap off and see if it'll start.
