So, despite all the warnings, I’ve embarked on changing the speedometer cable, primarily for installing a terratrip sensor.
Car is a 95/96 LHD SPI model. My intention is to install the longer RHD cable after modding it with the sensor. (Longer version so I have a bit of flex to position the sensor out of the way).

I’ve taken the current cable out, and it has a small white plastic tip on it. The new RHD cable doesn’t have this. I have another LHD standard cable I bought as a backup, and it also doesn’t have the plastic tip.

Can I just pull this off and push it onto the new cable or is it not required?

Some had white ends. These were for the later dash clocks. The older center Al ones were a screw fitting.

but not really knowing what you have a answer is hard to give,

So, it’s a Nippon Seiki 3 dial dash (photo 1).
Photo 2 is the current speedo cable with the plastic tip.
Photo 3 shows the longer RHD speedo cable (with the grey housing).
Photo 4 shows a the “spare” LHD cable… which also doesn’t have the plastic tip.

To be fair it looks like it has the clipping system built in.

Clip isn’t the issue, it’s the end of the shaft.
On the original it has a white plastic pin on the end of the cable.
The replacement parts have the metal shaft extended into the housing.

So anyway… the plastic tip you will find on some SPI / MPI.
You don’t need to move it over onto the replacement cable, just stick that sucker in there.
Also the plastic ends seem to all be compatible.

I’d guess the plastic tip was a cost saving in production, so they didn’t need to grind both ends of the cable square.

will plastic tip not prevent wear over long run to speedo head drive, so cable will wear instead of speedo head? never seen one like that before always been metal ends, rover mod?
