I have only seen the engine numbers reversed stamped onto plates a riveted below the thermostat on older minis. I haven’t had anything to do with the A+ motors i have a motor that has no rivet holes ( nor any signs of repairs ) and the number is stamped directly into the block and starts 12A it has a carb and no ecu. It’s not the original engine for the car and has been replaced at some point . I have done the guesswork finder and it states spi I was wondering if it could have been converted to a carb .

Any help or direction greatly appreciated.

Later ones did not have the plate. Yes it might have been converted or swapped out.

Nice one thanks for that nice to know it’s not something someone has knocked up . Will do some more digging as not really looked at the car yet in the daylight. Is there anything that will stand out if it’s been converted.

gf's car  is 1992 italian job this is also 12A, only coopers where injection until 1994/5. these age cars also have cat (may have also been removed) and wiring for rear has plug inside on lh side, not bullet connectors under scuttle,. and also larger slot in seat cross member for loom to go through. if has been swapped to carb may still have injection tank fitted and fuel pipe under car for return. 1992 cars have fuel feed and vapour so only 2 pipes not 3. hope this helps

Hi thanks for your reply the mini in question is a 86 that I acquired at the weekend that has had a engine changed  to the ( 12A spi ) carb set up at some point before the previous owner . Just had a quick look no cat is fitted the head has what looks like 1300 cased into it behind the thermostat . No temp sender in the head looks like it’s in the thermostat housing . Plus it has a mechanical fuel pump on the back of the engine .

I will get a better look in the daylight and a after a clean up I will see what other numbers and clues  I can find to try to work out exactly what I have.

Is there any thing I should be looking for ?
Thanks again for your help much appreciated.
