This may be a bit long….

I live in a moderate sized city in Canada but there are no local garages who can service my ’96 Rover Mini Cooper Spi, nor any local source of parts.  I get mine from the UK and do most of the work myself..  However, my Mini  has an issue with 2nd gear and I expect it needs replacement. I don’t do transmissions. I intend to take it quite far for this work (a two-day trip), to a reputable Mini technician.  However, since I don't know his stock of pats, I would like to get there with the required parts ready to go so the there will be no wait for parts from overseas, and no need to have a lengthy stay.  I intend (so far) to get a gearbox refurb kit and a new 2nd gear.  I have new baulk rings. Assuming that all the other gears are ok, is there anything else I need to acquire so that this job goes smoothly?  There are an unverified 27,000 miles on the odometer.

I'm guessing the rebuild kit is this one? http://www.minispare...px|Back to shop

I've been told that the swiftune Layshaft is with getting rather than the minispares Layshaft that comes in the above kit.

Definitely one of these http://www.minispare...|Back to search

It looks like it only has one Idler bearing in the kit so would need another one of them to go into the transfer housing. http://www.minispare.../TUK100320.aspx

6 X http://www.minispare...ck to catalogue

Differential parts, or a cross pin diff.These/Diff_Parts/DAM6624  and this Diff_Parts/DAM6624 and thrust washers (or equivalent) or one of these http://www.minispare...Units/C-AJJ3385

Maybe one of these http://www.minispare...|Back to search

And  Maybe one of these http://www.minispare...|Back to search

1 X http://http://www.mi...hift/Rod~Change

May need some of these shims so the the pre load can be set, theres a few thickness's to get this correct. http://www.minispare...sic~Mechanical~

These if the old ones are worn and they company can machine the new bushes to suit your pot joints. http://www.minispare...ssic/Classic~Me

These shims to get the correct pre load on the 3rd motion bearing, again different thickness to achieve the correct pre load. http://www.minispare...G705645GM.aspx?

But until the box is stripped it's impossible to know what needs replacing, the 1st/2nd synchro hub may be worn etc

Maybe also worth thinking about getting an oil pump while it's exposed, One of these stripped and checked to see if the tolerances are correct http://www.minispare...l_pumps/GLP138. Or get an AC Dodd Zero tolerance one which is the same pump but has been checked and adjusted, I think these are available from AC Dodd on TMF and Facebook or Thomas Classic and modern on Facebook.
