Hi everyone, I’ve been refurbishing the front suspension and hubs and got to the stage of putting it all back together again but having trouble with the new pot joint gators.

It’s as if the driveshafts aren’t long enough as the gator is almost inside out now I have it strapped in place. Obviously the driveshafts are just fine so I’ve messed something up somewhere.

Has anyone else come across this before?
I put the driveshafts back together with the gator sitting in the depression in the driveshaft but maybe that’s not correct?

Looking at a picture I took before fitting the shaft (attached) the gator does look fairly far down the shaft but surely the depression in the shaft is there to locate the gator?

The gators are genuine ones from mini spares.

Looks like I’ll be taking it all apart again 😞

Sorry your having issues. Also sorry but your picture didn't load (maybe over 2 mb ?).

This is a cross section of the Pot Joint showing where the Gaitor should be fitted and the Drive Shaft fitted in to it;-

The inner of the Pot Joint does move in and out a fair bit, more so in with the Gaiter correctly fitted. I'm wondering if the Gaiter is incorrectly fitted and this is what's making the drive shafts appear short ?

Thank you so much! I’ve spotted my issue straight away ‍♂
I’ve secured the boot to the shaft itself instead of the inner part of the pot joint which is pressed onto the shaft.

No wonder I had a job on getting the boot stretch over the gearbox end

I guess I’ll be dismantling it all again!

Thanks so much for your help.

Don't sweat it, you are definately not the first to make that particular mistake.
One mini I purchased had the ball cage on backwards so nothing to stop it pulling out and the cv boot on the drive shaft! 8-)

All back as it should be now 🙂
It’s so obvious now I know!

I was in a bit of huff at the thought of having to remove the hubs again but other than a little chipped paint on the arms from the balljoint separator it was pretty quick to rectify.

Onwards to the next job now!

Thanks again!

P.S. I also subscribed 🙂

It's funny how when you pick that tin of grease up, it's on the clean rag in your pocket, in your pocket, in your hair, in your underwear, on the dog, on the carpet, in the bed sheets and on your wife.

Then,,,,,then you open the lid,,,,,,,,
