Come to fit engine to gearbox...

I know to leave the half moon long and overlap the gasket on top; however the oil pick o-ring hugs the outer edge of the groove and the gasket covers this when in place instead of the gasket opening being clear of the o-ring?

Is this normal or should I make the gasket opening bigger to clear the o-ring ????

Looks fine to me.  Remember it is the inner surface that is really doing the sealing.

I hope the photo is not making it look better than it is; sort of covers half the o ring seal - just wondered if that's normal

When I lower the engine I'm not sure I can maintain such a central position.

I was expecting the gasket to be clear of the o-ring.

I tend to 'stick' the block to gearbox gaskets to the block with a smear of grease - that way the dowels and the studs over the diff housing locate them.

I must admit I personally trim the gasket to the size of the O ring groove - I prefer the o ring to have full contact with the block.  Original gaskets (way back when) didn't overlap like the new ones do.

However I'm sure 99.9% of people don't and I can't recall ever hearing of an issue.

That was my thinking to - FULL contact with the block!

Is another way to position the gasket first and push the o-ring into it's groove so that the gasket is tucked down around the edge of the o ring outer edge ??? Or shall I just trim it back.

The holes for the dowels are well clear - the won't position the gasket; stud holes are snug.

Do you just grease these gaskets?

I think putting the gasket in place first will be harder - they're not really soft/thin enough for you to push the o-ring on top.
As said - most people just assemble and have no issue.

I grease all gaskets apart from the headgasket and any that may have a sealant applied to them at the factory (like the genuine timing cover gaskets).

OK, I'll trim the gasket - Thanks

I think this is a combination of poor gasket cut and slightly oversize o-ring all supplied as part of same kit. Just dug out an o-ring from an older gasket set and it's smaller - sits central to the round groove. But the one shown here hugs the outer edge tightly; I have to push the new one in whereas the older one just drops in.
