Am setting the initial ride height on a friends mini, with the rears the wheel arch gap was huge, so I set it to what looked normal, but the hi-lo unit seemed very wobbly when seated into the rubber suspension unit. Assume the suspension will keep it from falling out? Car was jacked up off the ground so at full unloaded position.

Are the rubber cones new or old?  Old collapsed ones could cause the Hi-lo to be loose when the suspension is at full droop.  Either that or you've set it too low.

If you have decent cones and want it at that height you might consider fitting shorter dampers to stop the radius arms dropping so much.

The rubber suspension units are pretty recent, and not many miles. I’ll play around with them but was worried a bit about how loose they were, but with the weight of the car off the jack they won’t move much unless getting some serious air or more likely pot holes!!

The Hi-los normally get pretty jammed into the cones so probably won't come out at that point easily.  Only problem would probably be if the cone comes away from the subframe and then doesn't relocate properly - you could end up with a sudden increase in ride height!  At the other end the knuckle joint could come too far out of the cup and cause the seal to come away.  I don't think the Hi-lo would ever fall out completely unless it became separated from the cone but as said they normally get so jammed in at that point it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, I'll have a look this weekend when the storms have passed. My main worry was something jumping out of its seat mid-driving, and like you say not seating back in the same place!

I have a similar issue. But I've got new red dot cones wich are a bit higher than standard, so it's a bit expected.

With the front hi lo turned to its lowest setting still the hight is higher than original about half an inch. The cones have settled somewhat, but just did 100 miles or so.

The rear is a bit higher than I would like , but they also get lose when I put them lower. I'll just have to make a lot of miles and be patient.
