Hi Mini forum users

I have a question concerning the rear brake drums. I bought new drums from Minispares, cleaned all the parts on the rear brakes and fitted the drums with new pads and springs. Problem was, it wasn´t possible to bring the drums all the way down to the hub. I removed the pads and there is no difference. I found out that the drums sat too tight to the outer flange of the hubs (see red arrows). May be cheap drums?? But there are no alternatives available as far as I know.

My question is, where are the drums centered? Are they centered by the two little phillips screws? Or by the studs? Or at the outer flange of the hub???

Thank you very much

Thomas

The studs position the drums. Not used the screws for years.

sounds like something has not been machined correctly.

might be an idea to measure up the old and new drums.

The Drums index off the edge of the hub on the rears and the edge of the flange of the fronts

A few years back, there was a batch of drums that were too big in this dept. Yours can be salvaged, but all the same, being new, they should fit out of the box.

I ended up getting a set of Brembos - they were first class and same price as any others around.

I think my drums are a bit too tight. No name product....where can I find brembo drums? On the Brembo site I can only find the ones with the build in spacer.

Regarding your picture I would say that you use the spacered type as well

I checked Minispares again, they only offer one type of drum, that´s the one I bought. Minisport offers EBC drums but they are out of stock...are these better?

As I was typing my reply I was thinking that they should locate on the flanges but I remember a few builds I did with out shoes in where there seemed to be quite a bit of movement in the drums.

I do generally run the spacered drums but they do (or at least did) do both, Mini Manannan here on the forum ended up with a pair.

Yes, I had problems with rear drums. Just Google "Brembo 14.3168.10" I got mine from Autodoc, you might find them locally wherever you are though

I assume you've tried rotating them, including with the countersink screw hole 90 degrees out? I'd also have a close look to be sure it's not just on the edge. Not good for brand new parts, but a few strokes with a file might save you the hassle of returning them, if Minispares agree.

Thank you very much for the Brembo Part number. I might get it here but it seems that the non spacered type is currently not available . I run 19mm plates on the rear and the studs would be a bit short for the spacered drums which are 1“.

I rotated the drums and I even tried them on a spare hub. Will investigate later today if it would be enough to file them down a bit. Returning them is no option, would be too expensive with shipping and custom hasle from Germany. But I will contact Ivan from minispares. He is always very helpful.

I also tried two older drums and they fit.

Will keep you updated

I would not modify the hub. Get the drum machined to the correct size. Will save problems later on.

Shouldn't be that hard to d-i-y. You could screw the drum, inside out,  centred over another drum on the hub (without wheel studs) & turn it against something abrasive. Depends how much metal you need to remove.

Had a look through the workshop and found two older drums in quite good condition and they fitted straight away. Also these are a bit thicker and heavier. I would assume they are of a much better quality. There is a stamp: WFM 2029

Could you supply the part number for the rear drake drums with the built in one inch spacer?  I couldn't find one in the catalog.  Thanks
