All, I cant seem to find a definitive answer on this.

I have a Pickup first registered in August 1981. The MOT ran out in September 2021, and was not re MOT'd due to lack of use COVID etc etc.

Now I know that an MOT exempt vehicle must still be road worthy.

I believe from April 2022 my Pickup falls into the Tax / MOT Exempt Historic vehicle category.

So my question is, can I apply for the change of class to Historic on my V5 without a current MOT, or do I need to get it MOT'd first?

I'd get it MOTd, then even though it's exempt I'd still get it MOTd every 2 years

Edit:: you need the following to get the change of taxation.
Apply at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax.

You need to take:

the log book (V5C) in your name
your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11), if you have one
an MOT certificate that’s valid when the tax starts, or evidence if your vehicle’s exempt from an MOT (V112)
an insurance certificate or cover note (only in Northern Ireland)

Your pickup will be historic category from April, and therefore MOT exempt. I don't think you will need an MOT to change vehicle class, but as cal844 says probably best to get it MOTd anyway.

Thanks guys, I do intend to keep the car MOT'd every year as a fresh pair of eyes on anything is no bad thing.

I am happy to pay for an MOT, was more really a question of getting the Car Tax exempt, as this Gov seems to help themselves to my wage packet whenever they feel like it, and anything I can do to get a few pounds back I need to do.

Its currently £170 to Tax it, so saving that every year goes a long way on maintaining the car.

Just pay for your MOT, as long as you register the car as tax exempt before your current tax expires you won't have a fee to pay.

I went to the post office, I had to Pay 6 months and submit the historic change, you'll get £70 back.
