Hi all, I'm brand new to everything here.

Like most kids, Christmas day was always one of my favourite days when I was growing up. All the family were around, all the tasty food, new toys... and The Italian Job was always on TV. I watched it every year, got it on VHS. I've watched it so many times I can practically quote the entire film. And we all know the best bit of that film. I would build little minis out of lego, I built the Legionnaire coach for them to drive up into. I have 3 little die cast mini replicas from the film, and when I went to Turin a couple of years back, those cars came with me. I spent half the time there hunting down the film locations (it's amazing walking around a corner and going "That's the church!" or "Oh, that's the balcony where Camp Freddy stood!"), and tried to get a fun little photo in each spot with my little toy minis.

One of my former colleagues owned a 1991 Mini Mayfair, and he would occasionally drive it in and visit us after his retirement. The last time I saw him, I was talking to him about my love of these little cars, and he told me to "make him an offer". It's got under 25K miles on the clock, and has recently passed an MOT, but sadly is not in the best of states. He's old, doesn't have the energy to look adfter it properly, and is extremely thrifty, so didn't do anything beyond the bare minimum to keep it on the road. His benchmark figure was "less than £4K", as he'd seen one for sale for that price "in much better condition, but with a few more miles on it".

I thought about it, and decided that for a few grand, I would unfortunately be much better off buying a newer car that fulfills my needs.

Sadly, the owner died last month, and I attended his funeral yesterday, along with my other colleagues.

After the service, I was talking with his friend (who is dealing with the estate) about the last time we spoke, and I mentioned our conversation about the car.

He was very interested by this, as there is A LOT to sort out (the guy was a serious hoarder), and the only thoughts about the mini were taking it to a breakers yard. He took my number, and said that there is a strong possibility that I could acquire the mini once everything was sorted out- my former colleague would be horrified at the thought of ANYTHING being thrown away, let alone his car, and would have loved to see it go to a good home where it will be loved.

I would just love to know: what am I potentially getting myself in for?

I have never done any work on a car before.

I am a design fabricator by trade. I can weld both MIG and TIG, use a lathe, mill, any power tool you care to name, and have access to 3D printing and CNC machines. That side of things doesn't bother me at all.

My love for classic minis only extends as far as the design. That may horrify some purists out there, but I have no qualms about doing any upgrades to the running components or interior. I would much rather own something reliable and comfortable than a restored-to-factory car.

Should everything go smoothly with acquiring the car (I highly doubt the V5C or any documentation will ever be found, the house was full from floor to ceiling), my first action will be to take it to a local specialist, who have said they can give it a once over and advise me on condition and what needs addressing straight away.

As far as I know, it is unmodified, and has a 998cc engine.

In terms of making it into a usable car, what would people recommend to start with?

I know that: the rubber seals on the doors/windows are starting to perish.
It's missing the passenger wingmirror.

The driver's door doesn't shut flush with the body (this is the most concerning to me).

My budget will not be huge, as I think it will take time, and I need to buy a car for every day use, and also possibly move house within the year... I have plenty of time to do it, and would rather take the time to do it well and spend what's needed when I can.

Thanks in advance,

Eggers.

Hi and welcome. I would enquire if the local specialist could have a look at it before you hand over any cash and a mini is pretty simple mechanically and with a Haynes manual and you able to weld I can’t imagine you having too many major problems you sound a practical person and if you do get stuck you’ll be able to ask on here so good luck!

You should read about some of Ben_O's well documented projects for inspiration to have an idea of what you might want to get into. Or simply decide to stay away.

If it has recently passed an MOT and was being driven on a fairly regular basis then it will be in reasonable condition.

Thanks for this recommendation. Holy hell, he does a good job. Wonderful to read, but very scary when I think about what could potentially be in store for me.

I keep lying awake thinking about this, and hoping it happens, but honestly I have no idea if it will or not. I'll probably find out in a week or two, if the family manage to find keys and deal with any legal stuff. Fingers crossed though!

Ask for the registration number and check out on the https://vehicleenqui...v.uk/?locale=en website to see if there's a record of it. If it's on there then it's in the system so that'll be good.

Ok, so an update on this:

I've checked through the vehicle MOT history. There is the obligatory rust/corrosion notices, which seem to go away and then come back somewhere else. Hopefully it's been welded, and not just full of filler... If not, I will just borrow a MIG or TIG from work, and get cracking... eventually.

It's an automatic, which I'm not to keen on. I've never driven an automatic car before, and love the act of changing gears when driving a manual. Should I acquire it, changing to manual will be a serious consideration.
I mis-remembered the mileage: 41K, only driven 75 miles since October 2017 MOT. However, it has been MOT'd every year since then. The current owner (sadly deceased) seems to have done the bare minimum to keep it passing the MOT, and also barely driven it beyond going to the garage and back. This checks out with his personality, as he was the thriftiest guy you'd ever meet... and was proud of it.

Current status of me acquiring it:

It's parked on the road, and taxed until June 1st. Nobody else is expressing any interest (that I'm aware), probably because most of the family live in Ireland and don't know about it or care about it in the slightest. There's a hell of a lot more pressing things to sort out with the estate. His best friend of 60+ years knows I'm interested, has my number, and says the chances are they will sell to me when it's more pressing (i.e mid May) and the have the option of it being towed and forgotten about, or selling to me for "something more than £0". Currently, it's just a complex execution, as there's no will, and the car is the last thing on anyone's mind apart from mine!

Hopefully at some point in May or June, I will be startig a new thread with some good photos of a sad car that is ready to undergo a slow transformation into something I can be proud of. From there on, I will be documenting what happens, and probably asking a load of questions, because reading through the forums, I swear you're all talking a different language sometimes!

Eggers, I hope that you get the mini.

It will need more work than you imagine or want to admit.

Your skills in being able to weld put you in a good position to restore / repair where required.

I hadn't worked on any car before I started on mine, time, patience and a garage help.

Good luck

Cheers. I'm no stranger to taking on things that are more work than I want to admit. This will be the biggest challenge yet though! My biggest concern at the moment is not having a garage. I'm intending to move house at some point in the next 18 months, hopefully to somewhere with a workshop space that I will fight my girlfriend for , so I won't be able to keep it disassembled for too long! I just need to mak sure my current project list is completed before I take this on... But no doubt I will pick up a couple more projects on the way!

Hi all, hoping you can help me with a price guide?
Here's some pictures of the mini:
20220503-192222.jpg
20220503-192156.jpg
DSC-1606.jpg
DSC-1604.jpg

These were taken the last time I saw it (September).
It had just passed it's MOT.
Since then, I believe it has been sat on the road. It definitely hasn't moved in the last 2-3 months. It did a grand total of 5 miles between it's MOT in 2020 and 2021, most likely to the garage and back.

The last MOT report is:

29 September 2021
PASS
View test certificate
Mileage
41,189 miles
MOT test number
Xxxx xxxx xxxx
Test location
View test location
Expiry date
20 October 2022
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Nearside Front Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced sill (6.1.1 © (i))

It had straight a straight pass in 2020, and failed in 2019 on this:
Repair immediately (major defects):
Fuel system component leaking (6.1.3 (b) (i))
Nearside Rear Stop lamp(s) not working (4.3.1 (a) (ii))
Offside Rear Stop lamp(s) not working (4.3.1 (a) (ii))
Offside Rear Rear fog lamp does not emit a steady red light (4.5.4 (a))
Offside Front Floor excessively deteriorated (6.2.4 (a) (i))

But passed after with advisories on the tyres.

I know what my max is, but what do people think it's worth/ what is a reasonable price to pay?

Update:
This mini is now sat in my Grandma's driveway. I can't even begin to tell you guys and girls how happy this made me. It had a flat battery, and once jumped, kept cutting out when the accelerator was pressed, but that was soon sorted by lubricating the throttle. Drove it 16 miles home- it had done 5 miles between it's last two MOTs. It's in a bit worse state now- no wingmirrors at all, and even dirtier, but it's MINE.
Project threads coming soon!!!

Congratulations on taking the leap. Sounds a very similar story to my own. Putting my mini back on the road took me a long time. I basically stored the car in an army tent before making much progress, but we got there as I'm sure you will. Good luck and I hope you'll start a thread in the saloons section to record the process.

Before getting rid of the automatic box give it a try for a while, I had a mini 850 Automatic with 37K miles on it and it was the nicest mini i've ever driven.  Once you get used to it the autobox is really good although they do need regular oil changes to keep them working reliably.

I clearly managed to get very muddled up somewhere, but it's actually a manual, so I'm very happy about that.
It was possibly when I was a few beers in and the guy who helped arrange everything told me he used to own an automatic. Apparently the previous owner of mine commented that it must mean "1 - 2 - 3 - D... for Drunk!"
