You should have the papers for the car?

you will need a bill of sale. You will need to contact customs to check there are no import duties to be paid.

otherwise. MOT and insure it on the VIN/chassis number fill in the form from the DVLA. Send it of with a cover note MOT and a cheque for the required amount.

then wait.

Did you get a NOVA letter with the car to verify any import duty has been paid (or the vehicle was exempt at the time of import for any reason)? If not, that'll need sorting first. Once the import duty is sorted, you'll need as much paperwork as you can get your hands on to validate the year and identity of the car to avoid any scrutiny or argument from the DVLA, so hopefully you've got SA registration papers etc which should suffice. I'm not sure if heritage certificates are issuable for SA-assembled Minis, but it may be worth contacting British Heritage to ask if this is possible, as a heritage cert is recognised by the DVLA as a valid document to verify the manufacture date of the car, so this would be good if you can get one. A receipt or bill of sale should also be enclosed with your paperwork as proof of ownership, along with a copy of your ID (photocopy of your drivers license ideally) which also validates your address.

Given the age of the vehicle being over 40 years old, contrary to popular belief you don't actually need to MOT it prior to registration - simply submit a V112 form along with your V55 registration form to denote its tax & MOT exempt status. You could of course MOT it anyway for your own peace of mind, in which case you may as well send in a copy of the MOT certificate, but still do submit the V112 to ensure it's registered as MOT & tax exempt right from the start. Then you'll need to write a cheque for 55 pounds, and while they do ask that you submit proof of insurance, sometimes you can get away with not doing this - but it's a good idea to insure it anyway in case of theft/damage etc. Adrian Flux are one company that will insure an imported vehicle based on the chassis/VIN number and you can then submit a copy of their insurance certificate with all the other paperwork. Then expect at least 6 weeks or so turnaround before DVLA send you any response, and hopefully if all is in order, that response will be in the form of a letter issuing a new UK registration number (giving you authority to order number plates), and you'll also get a V5 in the post to accompany this.
