Can anyone tell me, please, what this relay is for, on my 1990 non-RSP Cooper?

The wiring on the car is completely standard as far as I'm aware.

I'm also afraid to mess with it too much to try to see what colours the wires are, in case I break whatever it is... would help if I knew it was something non-crucial!

Thanks in advance.

I may be wrong but it could be the relay for the pre-engaged starter circuit, difficult to tell without being able to see the cable colours.

Is it a 998? My 998 has a similar Relay for the starter circuit. Mini Spares has the relay listed as being for air con but it is also used for the starter circuit and could have other uses I guess.

What's written on the top of the relay?

The wire colours should tell you what it's for. Do you have a Haynes manual? The other way would be to trace where the wires go.

Thanks all.

I'll have a look in the Haynes now that I've got a clue with the starter motor. Glad I didn't mess with it now!

The reason I was looking is that I'm fitting new headlamp relays and that's where they'll be going, next to that one.

I don't have driving lamps and don't want them, although I realise other minis have those relays there so it was a good suggestion. I've got the only model of Rover Cooper that didn't come with them, so i like that look.

+1 for starter relay - on my 91 mini it has a rubber cover that goes over the relay and the terminals, but it seems to be missing here (or maybe never had one
