Right after having my engine and build and restoration, the gear shifts were flawless. The transmission had a rebuild with new sychro rings. It's been about 6k since and I'm noticing that on some days, the gearshifts aren't perfect. By that I don't mean any issue in engaging or failing to fall into gear, it's just that in certain instances I notice that the gear don't immediately fall in to place. There is a slight moment where you feel the synchro matching and then falling into place. I wouldn't call it grind, but it feels grindy... It takes a bitore force to. Where as normal, I try to gently place it into gear with little force as posible. If that makes sense.

I'm about to change the oil. Wonder if that will smooth things out again.

But in general I'm curious about what a propper transmission should feel like.

My only other reference is from 15 years ago when I had my rustly old Mk6.

I don't know if this helps but going back decades when I bought a mini brand new (1978)

I did find that the gears were more baulky and did'nt change as smoothly when the weather was hot.

A series Metros I had subsequently also exhibited a similar quality.

I had an Uncle with an 1100/1300 who always commented the same.

I always wondered if it was down to oil or manufacturing tolerances and wondered if modern lubricants were better for this.

At other times though the change was slick.

The gearbox will probably feel a bit 'crunchy' until the the oil has properly warmed up - about 15 minutes driving in my case.  Mind you, I use 20W/60 oil all year.

It may just be it needs an Oil Change and that can make quite a difference but I find a good gearbox build and driven in a respectful manner, the gearboxes feel the same slick way (once the oil is warmed up even a little) for a very long while, 50 000 + miles (usually well over this) isn't out of the question.
