    One Carb Or Two?

When i last started the car, about 4 years ago. It idled fine and would rev all the way up the range.  However when i engaged first gear it would only do about 10mph and if i put my foot down any farther it would start to conk out.

The fuel was new and is supplied by a Facet solid state pump.

I can't see a diaphragm on the side of the distributor so i guess it does not need a vacuum pipe.

So i am wondering if the HIF44 needs looking at.

I found a couple of exploded diagrams for the HIF series carb, one showed a fuel strainer and the other didn't.

Is there a fuel strainer that could clog up?

I realise there is only one jet in the HIF44 but is there something that takes over from idle on demand for more power within the carb design?

There is a small strainer just before the float jet that can clog up, yes.
Acceleration enrichment is built into the carb design, with a stronger Venturi effect across the carb bridge as the dashpot piston rises.

I did two videos showing a complete strip down & rebuild if an HIF44 should you decide to tackle it.
Though it was based on the turbo version, for all intents and purposes they’re essentially the same carb.

I bet it's down to the dashpot not moving freely. Worth a look. Conduct a dashpot piston drop test to see if it rises and drops to a nice clunk sound and put a little fresh oil in the top where the damper unscrews

Thanks BlackTulip, The piston does move freely.

To do the piston drop test do i just unscrew the dashpot damper and use it to pull the piston up and then let it go?

Is it possible to replace the filter without affecting the mixture setting when the jet is removed?

To do the drop test leave the damper in the dashpot and car off. you need to take the air filter off so you can feel the piston through the air intake at the back of the carb. Lift the piston and feel for a slight resistance and a smooth lift then let it drop. It should make a clunk noise as it hits the bottom.
