As long as the elbow fits. I've gone the other way on my Minor with a HIF airbox on a HS4

I had that box on the Mini but went back to the standard set up with a K&N element and didn't notice any difference in performance but a lot less induction noise. I've since gaffer taped half of the holes up to keep the noise down.

I have a k+n cone filter, it's mad how much you can hear. When I remove the carb I'll see if the hs4 elbow will fit the 44 and give it a try. I'll be fitting a twin box centre exit maniflow

It should do. I went from the cone to the drilled air box then back to the original mainstream Cooper set up - bliss :-)

I am using an HS4 filter housing with my HIF38.
Drilled the extran holes and have a K&N inside.
The housing works just fine on the HIF

The 44 elbow fitted my HS4 so all should be good the other way round - hopefully ;D

I've got a spare 44 so if I get a chance I'll check later.

OK I've got myself mixed up. The elbows are different  on the carb side but either elbow will fit the air box so the standard air box can be used on either the 44 or the HS4 elbow. So the answer to you original question is yes but you need the elbow to suit the carb you're using.

drilled air box much better if wanting standard look, like you say massive reduction in cabin noise

One of my mates drilled my airbox years ago when I had a mk4 ford escort (1.3) it made literally no difference to performance but the induction noise was lovely

Ive got a 38 airbox on ebay, 44 airboxs more sort after, sold both of mine (had the snorkel too), go for seriously strong money nowadays.

You'll miss the induction noise.

I'm not bothered about the induction noise, just going for the original look, you know me, I have daft ideas lol. Centre pipe is on its way
