Hi.

OK so i bought a new bonnet and new hinges, but didn't take a photo when i removed the old hinges so can't remember which hole in the bulkhead bracket they need to go back into.

In the first photo,

Hole 'A' seems too far away for the hinges to go into without hitting the lip of the scuttle panel - so can't use that one.

Hole 'B' seems to give the bonnet the most clearance when opening the bonnet, eg doesn't scuff the scuttle panel - BUT the gap between the scuttle panel and the bonnet is huge when closed!

I tried making the holes in the bonnet itself (where the hinges go) larger so i can sit the bonnet back further - but i cannot make the holes long enough to where the bonnet would sit with nice gaps.

Hole 'C' seems to line up the bonnet/scuttle gap the best - BUT, seems to scuff the scuttle panel when opening and closing.

SO i'm not sure what to do, i feel like hole 'B' is the better option as it doesn't scuff when opening, but could i somehow bend the brackets so that i can get the bonnet to sit further back?

Any help would be great.

Ok new bonnet first, new as in new so either Heritage or magnum??

If its Magnum then you are fighting a up hill battle as they are crap. Been there done that and never again. Heritage bonnet, much much better but may still need a tweak.

So second hand?? again this could have been a replacement sometime in the past so never take it for granted it will fit straight away.

I bought it new, from MiniSpares.com a few years back, its one that has 2 sets of brackets on the inside.  I think it was this one:

and then the hinges were bought from 'MinisMiffy' on ebay! They seem to line up with my old hinges though.

So, is it best to try and bend the brackets - somehow. In a vise maybe?
Ideally dont want to have to buy a new bonnet.

Project Erm in my signature showed exactly what i had to do with a Magnum bonnet. And yes it came with double hinges as the earlier cars had the hinges mounted further in. (just remove the inner ones)

I had to extend the hinge mounts on the bonnet to get the rear gap like yours correct.

The other thing is how is the front of the bonnet positioned in relation to the end of the wings and front panel??

For what it is worth my car has them in hole A.Does the bonnet fit reasonably well in the hole without the hinges fitted?
.If it does then reposition the bonnet side fastenings to suit.If it does not then further thought is required.Enjoy fettling,Steve..

OK so i think what i'll do is grind off the bolts from the hinges, then make the holes in these larger (longer), then this 'should' give me the room i need to have the bonnet sit further back when closed and mean i can use position 'B' on my photo above so that i get the clearance when opening and closing..... FINGERS CROSSED :)

Another thought, the return on the bonnet where it fits into the scuttle drain channel may benefit from massaging slightly to produce a V profile rather than a right angle. The depth may be able to be reduced also.Which part is contacting the scuttle as you open it?Steve..

Hi - yeah i did try that, it was mainly in the middle of the bonnet (the top edge), but also right on the very corners. I managed to V shape the middle section but the corners are more difficult.

I've just removed the bolts from the hinges (with the grinder), now im trying to make the holes larger - then will see if i can move the bonnet further back.

Will post back here after i see how it turns out

For anyone interested, using an angle grinder, I removed the bolts from the bonnet hinges, then made the holes larger and now the bonnet fits with nice gaps.

The bonnet hinge should be in home A. Remember it’s only got to go up high enough for the bonnet prop.
