Hi and thanks for reply so far
I assume the links to photos are working
My father raced and rallied both coopers and S's through the 70s and 80s so I'm not surprised if it's a Cooper engine

Any advice on how to safely start the car would be appreciated as I think it was last run 3 years ago

Thanks Meurig

Looks like a late mk1 Cooper S 1275.

Don't know the engine number but the number tag has been removed at some stage and replaced. Someone cut slots in the fixings to enable removal with a screwdriver. So maybe re-bored and the number put back on. Done it myself.

I would suggest putting some diesel down the bores and cranking it round a fair few times to lubricate the bores. Remember just enough to lubricate things.
