Rattle From Engine

Best Answer Kev.jones , 29 May 2022 - 05:25 PM

Ok, so i spent Saturday investigating the clattering noise , i removed the wok (clutch cover) and the plunger/lever mech. thinking back to rebuilding the motor/gearbox when i put the clutch cover on i fitted a new plunger, thought nothing of it. weeks later i purchased a new lever arm, when trying to fit it it was a right dick dance--it was really tight and i struggled getting it to fit, i persevered and eventually got it together.

i had a good look at it when i got it off, straight away i could see by eye that it was drilled off centre, got the vernier calliper out and measured it 0.4mm/0.016" off centre, this would explain why i struggled getting the lever arm in !. so being tight it wasn't returning off the pressure plate causing the release bearing to rattle , hard to believe it would cause so much noise! it quite literally sounded like the piston was slapping in the bore. i remedied it by filing out the hole to create clearance and hey presto its spot on now. So thanks to everyone for their input and ideas it gives encouragement when all seems to be going wrong. by the way i purchased the plunger from Ebay , there does seem to be an awful lot of poor quality parts about, this isn't the first time i been stung by this problem.

Hi ,after a 3 year rebuild i finally get the car on the road and after a hundred or so miles a rattle/knocking noise has developed towards the flywheel end of the engine, the engine has had a complete rebuild, rebore, hone ,crank polished , new main/big ends , lightend and balanced flywheel and clutch etc. the noise is prevalent whilst idling without the clutch being depressed ,once the clutch is depressed the noise reduces significantly, to say I'm disappointed is an understatement, any suggestions what to check first, regards Kev

Clutch release bearing or you have a bit of a cam in the build and the drop gears are rattling.
