I wouldn't have wanted to be one of the stewards that ended up pushing the broken down Jag!
A 1951 mk V Jaguar, with Dame Prue Leith in the back seat, part of the 'Dames in their Jags' section of the Pageant, had completed nearly all the course, but an electrical failure left it stranded near the Royal Box and eventually stewards had to push it off to the side in Constitution Hill.
The chauffeur whose vintage Jaguar ground to a halt in front of the Royal Box said: 'I'm so embarrassed – of all the places to break down! Lucy Davenport, whose husband's family restored and own the car, she ruefully said: 'It was the longest five minutes of my life.' Lucy added: 'The battery on the car was always a bit unreliable, but because we were going around at slower than walking pace, it gave out just as we passed the Royal Box.
The Bake Off star and her husband John Playfair had cut short a holiday to appear in the Pageant, but Lucy said the veteran cook was 'very nice' about the whole incident. Dame Prue, 82, was also seen laughing off the break down and continuing to wave enthusiastically to the crowd as the vehicle stopped during Jubilee celebrations outside Buckingham Palace before the vintage Jaguar was quietly removed from the Pageant.
It was part of the second act, The Time of Our Lives progressing through seven decades of culture, music and fashion, within the four-section pageant.
The 'Dame' section of the Jubilee pageant was dubbed 'hags in Jags', by Joan Collins, who featured in the section alongside Arlene Phillips and Twiggy, as they drove down the road in open-topped vintage cars.
