Bought one of these literally decades ago.

Any good on a turbo?

If it's going to be difficult to tune the SU needle I might just go injection...

Why do you think injection will be easy to tune?I have two non mini injected classics and tuning is quite involved. No criticism just experience(I may just be a useless tuner)Steve..

I guess it depends on the injection system.

My assumption is that there's plenty of expertise out there among dyno operators in tuning aftermarket electronic fuel injection (running wet manifold not siamese injection). Something more mechanical like Bosck K-jetronic would be a different story.

For a classic mini with a bit of boost, I'd say the HIF44 would be the most widely used. There should be plenty of experienced tuners that can help you out

Lots over on TurboMinis have gone over to injection, but also with 7 port heads. Familiarity with the software won't be the only issue, not many will have experience of injected siamese ports.

ECU is essentially dumb, until you tell it what it has and what you expect it to do it does nothing. If you tell it to do something stupid it will just go ahead and do it.It seems that setting timing with a dissy is difficult, missing tooth, timing offset etc is challenging in a different direction. When fitting ECU the first thing to do is verify the timing is what you think it is.Too many think it is not needed and "I skipped that part".Wrongly set injectors squirt litres of fuel in minutes and incorrect timing can cause fires(I set one of my cars on fire)

Tuning;the best dyno can only tune cranking pulse and warmup from cold,so maybe once per day.I tuned my car in the summer, when winter arrived it looked up the cranking pulse and  had no value as it had never been cold enough so it used the last summer setting resulting in not starting.

Seeing the picture?I suggest it is very interesting and rewarding but you need to have access to the tuning software and be able to use it.

If you are interested I think it is the way to go.Sorry to drone on,Steve..

Yes, I get the picture - I'm an ex automotive engineer.

Sorry, not trying to teach egg sucking.I hear of so much disappointment caused by fitting injection and I sense that it is expected to perform like a modern car out of the box.User input is I think critical. If you are already familiar it is definitely the way to go.I have a Siamese port 1800 MGB running Megasquirt for the last 20 years or so(used this because it was ridiculously cheap at the time and it was sold as "experimental" It certainly was with next to no instructions or support.Steve..

Hi Steve, that's really interesting - does it run ok?

I think the user interface software has come on a lot in the last 20 years.

Done over 100K with it and for a cobbled together system using scrapyard parts it is OK.The test with modified motors for me is to let your wife drive it.Mine complained that the winkers did not self cancel,so I took it to have passed.Could it be better?most probably.I use four port injectors staged so it runs on two till 2200rpm and then all four after that.To illustrate how much of a bodger I am the sparkplugs have not been out in ten years,I have made no attempt to cater for the Siamese ports as early Megasquirts did not cater for it and an upgrade to a new ECU would be needed or sequential injection. As I am very poor and retired it will have to do,Steve..

Modern ecus are much better and advanced. I tuned my haltech in 2 hours. It starts in the key perfectly and uses wideband lambda in closed loop for fuelling and knock control strategies.

I went over to the specialist components set up for my turbo and I have never looked back. In the right hands its proved to be very good.
And its produced some very impressive results on the dyno. I mainly use it on track but like steve says it starts on the button and ticks over lovely, and i do run a phase 3 cam in it. I also have it set up in closed loop and the fuel ratio is rock steady.
I got frustrated with the carb when I went to 1460 and td04 but the electronic throttle body handles all throttle positions with quick response.
