Hi all I need some help with the correct needle for my mini. It's running a newly rebuilt hif44 carb the car is a 1380 running a swiftune csi distributor and a med stub stack and filter currently running a bdr needle but is awful at start up from cold runs fine when warm though

I agree with the above, if you have a modified engine it needs setting up on an rolling road and one that has the needles to make adjustments, not just reprogram ECUs. Do you know who did the engine work, could they not give you initial start point advice?

I would contact Ac Dodd on this forum.  He does travel and can modify a needle/tune to suit your application.  Or, go to the SU Midel Haystack website, its very helpful and for comparison can graph needles.

I'd echo the suggestion to get in touch with AC Dodd, he's easily contactable on Facebook Messenger and gets great results from single SU-powered cars with a static tune.

If it runs fine when warm it can't be far off, and warm is the condition it should be tuned for.  Is the cold start enrichening device working properly?

How much choke are you using? You may only need 1/4 or 1/2 choke...

You may not have it correctly adjusted. The first 2 mm should be free play in the cable, the next 2 mm or so should open the throttle and then begin to open the choke.I am not familiar with HIF carbs though. The use of choke is an ancient dying art and every car has its own individual needs,Steve..
