Is this the right section to post this thread in?

Looking to purchase a 1960s Mini Cooper with my brother as "S" models are very expensive now.

I am no mechanic and will probably be asking for buying advice. Also what would be handy is the details of any trusted local mechanics in advance to the  Sidcup, Kent area that could carry out any work and servicing. In addition would any of these mechanics be willing to look over a potential purchase to help ensure I am buying a legit Cooper.

If anyone knows of one for sale please point me in the direction. Ideally I would like a blue, white or green in original colour. I may post up details of any for sale that I have seen and am interested in. May help if someone knows of a car and if its any good.

Thank you in advance

I can't point you in a direction but I will give you a little bit of advice, be very very careful when you buy one, there are so many log book cars out there and cars which have been bodged together basically because they make a premium, a heritage certificate doesn't mean its genuine, it just means the numbers match the log book ( and there are plenty of those for sale).

I agree with Shooter, and I think it would be wise to post up the ads of any you are interested in, as forum members tend to give good honest answers, the more photos the better.

I’m sure you have done it already, but have look on YouTube and watch videos of folk restoring and repairing Classic Minis, it will give you an insight into the perils and pleasures of Classic Mini ownership. The rust, the hassle, the expensive jobs, the inexpensive jobs and everything in between. You can never have too information!

Also maybe look for a local Mini club near you, as getting a “professional opinion” is tricky, as most AA / RAC or similar inspection reports may not be aware of all Classic Mini idiosyncrasies, ie log book cars. This normally means a later car with an early log book (V5C), which some sellers say has been “reshelled”, but often it’s a much later car with the identity of an older one.

You seem to be set on a Cooper, however I would I suggest looking at non cooper models, I guess it depends on why your buying and what your plans are for it.

Good luck!

What is your budget ?

some 60's mini's go for crazy money, eg:
https://www.pistonhe...isting/12160493
https://www.pistonhe...isting/13436529
https://www.pistonhe...isting/13562142

others might be more reasonable eg:
https://www.ebay.co....tm/134154328873
https://www.ebay.co....tm/325229439567

I cannot vouch or recommend any of these, not looked in detail at them and I don't have as much knowledge as some members on here do (get some very good advice on here)

But yes as mentioned above, be very cautious, do your reserach and ask a few people for advice on each car you see before buying one.

Alex toon has a black over OEW mk1 Cooper S for sale. It’s mint condition. £55k.

He’s on Facebook or could be contacted via his YouTube channel, Classic Mini Details.

Might also be worth asking on the Mk1 mini forum.

It also depends on exactly what model you are after. Not all minis are "Coopers", and you can build a basic car up to be essentially the same as a Cooper or Cooper S and have much the same performance, and just not have the Cooper S VIN tag

Most 1960's minis were Austin or Morris and there was a decent range, plus Mk1-Mk2

1000

997 Cooper

998 Cooper

970/1071/1275 Cooper S

Probably £20,000.

Thought maybe buy from a dealer but they can't always be trusted!

I have been looking at the three below. Anyone know of them?

1969 Morris Mini Cooper MkII 998cc

1967 Mini Cooper MKI

The second one down says reserved, so I guess basically sold.

Remember, thanks to the Consumer Right Act 2015, you are now more protected when buying from a dealer, if they have hidden something from you, you have 30 days come back, and you don’t have to have purchased an additional warranty. Obviously you want to prevent yourself having to go through that, and don’t take my word for it, please do you own research.

The third car, private sale, looks decent value, depending on paperwork the vendor has to back up the work.

I’m sure there will be some folk more knowledgeable than me along shortly….

As a final check I would strongly advise you register and then run them past the Mk1 Forum members in link below, as they often have useful info on Mk1 Mini Coopers for sale not available elsewhere:-

Just to back up what I was saying earlier you might want to do a search on How many left for mk1 850 automatic minis are left against how many Cooper and Cooper S

Why Mini 850's? Would they be rare, as most were scrapped over Coopers.

Thanks

I think that's what Shooter is implying, scrapped or they had their engine swapped to 1000 or 1275. Not sure about an Auto, not as fun to drive as a manual, and apparently a pain to get fixed I think I read.

You haven't said why you are buying, it is for simply for driving, have you had a Classic Mini before? Or perhaps investment? Or perhaps something else?
