hi all

ive just bought myself some new door hinges albit aftermarket ones, the problem i have is they are so stiff i cant open them i literally had to put them in the vice and grip them with the mole grips to move them enough to get the screws in to fix them to the door. the door is now so stiff to open that i can feel the hinges actually flexing the door edge!!.i know they have to be reasonably tight to prevent the door dropping but surely this cant be right?

tried that mate had em in the vice oiled and worked them, still cant move them by hand. thought about driving the pin out and maybe reaming them out and perhaps replacing the pin with a snug fitting high tensile bolt? other than that package them back up and try and get my money back, lesson learned here though DONT BUY CHEAP S**T

And on a side note here some of these pattern hinges are actually thicker ( or in some case thinner) so if you get them to operate smoothly be wary about any shims you may or may not have.

I found out the expensive way for my lad on Project Erm.

I had the same problem on mine but with OEM hinges.

I drove out the roll pin on both hinges, reemed out the middle part of the hinge (the part that attaches to the car) filed off a bit of the flats of the hinges and put them back together, they work perfect.

Might need to do the same to the new hinges you have but with them being new and you cant use them without modification theyve been sold not fit for purpose so either send them back or if theyre copies fom an oriental country, theyll offer a part refund until you accept. Beware they WILL give you a false address so they cannot be returned....

thanks for the replies, bought them from a well known mini parts supplier ,so retuning them shouldn't be a problem. i had a play with them this afternoon took pins out and reamed out the holes but no joy i suppose i could redrill them out slightly bigger and fit a bolt though but t thought sod it ive paid for workable hinges i shouldn't have to fettle them myself so i'm going to send them back and do what i should have done in the first place and bought genuine/ heritage items. Like i said lesson learned.
