Gradually getting used to my British Open Classic but have always felt that mechanical noise and vibration is excessive, particularly at tickover. Sounded like noisy tappet, despite having just adjusted, so took for a good run this morning. When I got back I left the engine running and the “knocking” was evident and the tickover rather erratic, but when I started undoing rocker cover fixings the tickover increased slightly and became more even and the noise greatly reduced. When I checked the inside of the cover it is badly scraped where no. 1 and no. 8 valve spring caps have been hitting. The cover is a chrome one, possibly aftermarket, and I will now fit an alloy one but can’t understand why the noise seems to disappear at higher revs.

Also, if I set the tickover really low I seem to get a rattle from within the clutch housing, which goes away at higher revs. I have been told that it is probably to do with the idler gear, but I don’t want to remove the engine at the moment. Is it something to worry about or is it standard for a Mini?

Don't read here WHERE the rockers hit the rocker cover. If the rockercover is wide enought, but not tall enough, would it work if one fitted two cork rocker cover gaskets and therefor lifting the rocker cover?

If that would work, then I would take a normal tin/metal rocker cover (the ones with the rounded ends), place the first gasker OVER the rocker cover, sliding it down to towards where the lip is where normally the gaskets is placed under. (I always use this procedure to " reshape"  the cork Rocker cover gasket before fitting as they "collapse" otherwise on the long sides (curving inwards). Placing it on a rocker cover for some time, does help in persuading it to the correct shape..

This way, the cork is shaped in the way that the original outline of the rocker cover is and it will not collapse on the long side (as the rocker cover on the inside prevents this). Apply some kind of sealant to the top side of the cork gasket and place the second gasket on top of it (sliding it down the Rocker Cover (as the rocker cover acts as a fill piece).

I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to achieve with the rocker cover on the inside (diameter) of the rocker gaskets..

Any one an opinion if two gaskets (sealed to one other) will help enough to clear the rocker cover??

Never known this to happen on steel covers but known plenty of alloy ones that foul especially if you fit roller rockers.

It happens if you over tighten the bolts. Or don’t align the cover correctly.

Thanks for responses, am going to fit alloy cover as (in my opinion) it looks better.
